Rising Stars: Meet Eugene Huang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eugene Huang.

Eugene Huang

Hi Eugene, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey in art began in my childhood, influenced by my grandfather, whose passion for art inspired me to pursue a path in artistic creation. He made me realize that art is not only a way of expression but, more importantly, a bridge that connects human emotions, thoughts, and our relationship with the world.

As time passed, I transformed my passion for art into a personal exploration. I often draw inspiration from various aspects of daily life and am curious about the connections between humans, nature, and the universe. This curiosity drives me to explore more themes related to human relationships in my works.

After studying illustration in New York, I am now studying printmaking in London. Art creation has become not just a means of self-expression for me but a way of life. I aim to experience different cultural atmospheres to explore the vastness and diversity of the world. Art comes from life, and I believe these experiences will bring new inspiration and vitality to my works.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey has not been smooth, mainly because novel creative methods always attracted me. I am dedicated to discovering a unified artistic language that can integrate my personality and style.

Although illustration is my comfort zone, my exploration of mediums has not ceased. Each artistic medium can influence the expression of a work in its unique way, endowing the piece with different energies and depths. Such diversity can bring endless possibilities to my art creation. The medium of an artwork is like a language, where each medium has its vocabulary and grammar, which can be combined with themes to convey various emotions. This is both a test of my abilities and an expansion of the boundaries of art.

Through continuous exploration, I believe I can discover or integrate ways to perfectly showcase my artistic concepts. I also look forward to continually finding new aspects of myself in this process.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My art creations always follow a consistent theme: exploring the connection between humanity and the universe. This exploration encompasses various aspects: the dialogue between humans and religious beliefs, how technology shapes humans, symbiotic relationships with other species, and the exploration of human subconsciousness. Each area provides me with a platform to attempt to interpret the meaning of human existence.

After exploring mysticism, I started documenting the images that came to my mind after establishing spiritual connections with others. I strive to capture these indescribable spiritual experiences and transform the emotions and inspiration I felt during these experiences into visual art pieces. Through this approach, I hope to inspire deeper contemplation on the essence of life.

My latest work, “Guardians,” has opened a new chapter in my exploration of mysticism. I hope to establish emotional and spiritual connections with a broader audience, embarking on a journey of dreams and subconscious exploration, building a spiritual universe full of creativity and inspiration.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Under the influence of the pandemic, I have discovered new avenues and possibilities in my art creation.

At that time, I was preparing to enter my sophomore year of college, but due to the outbreak of the pandemic, my entire sophomore year was continued through online courses.

The change in teaching mode impacted my creative approach. Due to the limitations of remote teaching, I found that the delicate texture of traditional hand-drawn works was difficult to convey through a digital screen to professors, making it challenging for them to provide precise feedback as they would with physical works. Additionally, due to time zone differences, real-time communication with professors became difficult, making it hard to receive timely advice during the creative process and making subsequent modifications troublesome.

In this context, I began to experiment with digital drawing. Digital art not only ensured the clarity of my work during dissemination but also greatly enhanced the flexibility and adjustability of the pieces. This offered unprecedented convenience for my art creation during the pandemic and enabled me to discover new methods of artistic expression in a constrained environment.
