Today we’d like to introduce you to Soohyun Kim.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hey there! I am Soohyun Kim, go by Lisa. I’m currently working as a 2D animator at Buck Design’s LA office. Originally from South Korea, currently located in Pasadena, CA.
My journey in the world of art began at a young age, with a growing passion for drawing and painting, leading me to Kaywon High School of Arts in South Korea, where I majored in Fine Arts. Those years were truly enlightening, offering me invaluable learning experiences that broadened my artistic horizons.
After high school, I continued my journey at Hongik University in Seoul, studying Ceramics and Glass. While I enjoyed experimenting with this new medium, after four years of study, I realized it wasn’t quite my thing. That’s when I took a step back to think about why I loved art in the first place.
Remembering my joy in creating digital art, I decided to switch gears and pursue graphic design at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. It was a big change, but I was eager to challenge myself and study abroad. It took me three years to earn my second bachelor’s degree, but it was worth it. Some people questioned why I didn’t go for a Master’s, but I wanted to start from the basics in design and lay the groundwork.
During my third year at SVA, I took a motion graphics class that opened my eyes. Combining design and animation clicked for me and gave my career a new focus. While I enjoy design, bringing designs to life through animation is what I’m really passionate about.
After graduating, I landed an internship at Buck in LA, and that’s where my career as a 2D animator began. It wasn’t always easy finding my niche, but every step along the way has been worth it.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, it hasn’t always been a smooth road, but overcoming challenges has been an integral part of my journey.
One of the struggles I faced was transitioning from one field of study to another. Moving from ceramics and glass to graphic design required me to adapt to a new set of skills and ways of thinking. It took time and effort to bridge the gap between these disciplines, but the experience ultimately enriched my creative perspective.
Moreover, moving alone to the United States from Korea itself was really hard. Everything was different. I had to get used to a whole new way of life, including the culture and language. Also, moving from New York City all the way to the West Coast to Los Angeles was another significant change. It required a lot of adjustment and a change in my lifestyle.
Adapting to these changes required more than just physical relocation; it demanded a complete overhaul of my lifestyle and mindset. I had to learn to navigate new social norms, adjust to different work cultures, and find my place in a diverse and dynamic community.
Looking back, even though there were challenges along the way, I’m grateful for all the lessons I learned. They’ve helped me grow and become who I am today, both personally and professionally.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a 2D animator specializing in animating elements using After Effects and occasionally employing cel animation techniques. I have a strong passion for bringing 2D graphics and illustrative elements to life through animation.
One project that I’m particularly proud of is my collaboration with a team to create a Netflix series called ‘We the People’. This project presented numerous challenges, including tight deadlines and the need for creative problem-solving. However, the collaborative effort paid off, and the end result was incredibly rewarding. The series received positive feedback from both the client and the audience, which was a testament to our hard work and dedication.
What sets my work apart is my dedication to blending design principles with animation techniques, which helps create visually engaging content. With each project, I strive to bring genuine enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence, always aiming to deliver results that meet or exceed expectations.
Overall, I’m proud of the work I’ve accomplished and the skills I’ve developed along the way. I’m constantly pushing myself to learn and grow, always seeking new opportunities to expand my expertise and make a positive impact through my work.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a curious and imaginative child with creativity. I always spent my time drawing something. My parents supported me in pursuing what I loved to do, and I consider myself very fortunate to have them as always supportive and great parents.
Personality-wise, I tend to be more introverted, preferring quiet reflection. However, once I develop close relationships, I become very talkative and outgoing, revealing a bright and engaging side of myself.
In terms of interests, art has always been my primary focus. I love exploring different mediums and techniques, constantly seeking new ways to express myself creatively. Visiting galleries and museums provide a lot of inspirations, fueling my desire to grow and evolve as an artist.
