Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Lavitt Michaelsen.
Hi Jacqueline, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My journey into the world of art began with a deep-seated appreciation for its narrative power. Delving into art history and digital design courses during my high school and college years only fueled my passion further. Little did I know then that this fascination would pave the way for the creation of my own freelance enterprise.
Upon graduating from Towson University, I eagerly embarked on a freelance graphic design venture, accepting any digital design projects that came my way. My primary objective was clear: to amass a wealth of experience and gain insights into the diverse needs of businesses, both large and small. Each project became a steppingstone, guiding me to refine my pricing strategies, streamline my processes, and identify my niche within the industry.
Through a series of trials and triumphs, I honed my focus on offering Branding, Social Assets, and Art Direction services, finding my niche amidst the vast landscape of design. It was a journey marked by both setbacks and successes, but through perseverance and adaptability, I eventually established Jacqueline Lavitt Designs, Inc.
Today, based in Los Angeles, I proudly lead my business, specializing in Art Direction and delivering top-notch Graphic Design services. My path has been a testament to the transformative power of passion, resilience, and unwavering dedication to the craft.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If my journey had been entirely smooth sailing, I’d question if I were truly challenging myself. Struggles have been an integral part of my path, and to deny their presence would be disingenuous. Even today, I encounter obstacles that demand perseverance and creative problem-solving. Embracing these challenges has been essential to my growth and development as an Art Director and Graphic Designer.
One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced is understanding my own value and setting appropriate pricing for my services. I’ve reached a point where I refuse to compromise on my rates because I recognize the value of my time and effort invested in each project. However, there was a period when I accepted any project that came my way simply because it meant work. It’s been a journey to establish this confidence in my worth, but it’s a crucial aspect of running a successful freelance business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Since 2018, I’ve been at the helm of Jacqueline Lavitt Designs, my freelance venture specializing in art direction and crafting brand identities, social assets, and websites. Throughout my journey, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with esteemed brands such as Nike, UGG, The Bar Method, Bandier, Starface, and Vivant Skincare. Yet, alongside these notable names, I’ve also had the pleasure of nurturing budding brands and supporting nonprofits shaping their identities from the ground up.
My design ethos is defined by a modern sensibility, yet I pride myself on my ability to tailor each project to the unique essence of my clients. Whether it’s a global powerhouse or a local startup, I am committed to bringing their vision to life, ensuring that every design reflects their distinct identity and meets their specific needs. It’s this personalized approach that sets my work apart and fosters enduring partnerships built on trust and creative excellence.
In reflecting on my career thus far, one accomplishment that stands out as a source of immense pride is the rebranding of Bandier’s renowned workout line, All Access. This endeavor involved a comprehensive overhaul, from redesigning the logo and selecting new typefaces to crafting original patterns for the clothing line. The true testament to the success of this rebranding effort lies in the fact that the company continues to embrace and utilize the designs and art direction that I created to this day.
Witnessing strangers adorned in apparel bearing my designs is an indescribable feeling—one that transcends the digital realm I’m accustomed to. It’s a uniquely gratifying experience, reaffirming the impact and resonance of my work beyond the confines of the screen. This tangible manifestation of creativity, intersecting with people’s daily lives, serves as a constant reminder of the profound connection between design and human experience.
How do you define success?
To me, success is defined by failures. It encapsulates the idea that setbacks, challenges, and failures are integral components of the journey toward achieving success.
