Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Batres.
Hi Jorge, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born and raised in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, my family and I immigrated to Los Angeles for a safer life. (Juarez is one of the most dangerous cities in the world.) The change and culture shock was not easy. I had to learn how to speak English in 5th grade. We came to this country with $2,000 in cash and there was no going back. We lived in the projects in a one-bedroom apartment with 11 people for years. I was constantly bullied at school because I would often wear the same clothes. My insecurity lead to creativity. I had to be resourceful, and I learned how to create multiple looks with just a half dozen articles of clothing.
That’s when my interest in fashion began. Years later after saving up money from selling chips at school, I started my first clothing line during my High School years. My clothing line opened up great doors and attention from leaders in my community. As a young immigrant entrepreneur, I received support from Lawrence Maltz (1 of the 7 founders of Starbucks), and he taught me about bookkeeping and finances. I received awards and recognition from the Mayor of Los Angeles and the President of Ford Vehicles for starting a business at such a young age.
Today I still have my collection. We focus on headwear specifically targeted to young people that are strong in their faith. We create relevant timeless designs with biblical references. Our goal is for our designs to spark conversation around spiritual values and give our customers an opportunity to share their testimony with whoever asks about the hat they’re wearing. We call this approach “reverse evangelism”. Our hats open up doors to create relationships with strangers. The name of our business is Christ Like Collection.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
-language barrier
-no connections
-no resources
-generational poverty
-no previous knowledge about business
-self-doubt
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lessons I’ve learned is that you can “serve your way to the top.” You can serve others, help others reach their goals, and through that process you will be equipped and prepared to make your dreams come true.
