Check Out Yunqian Lin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yunqian Lin.

Yunqian (Q) Lin

Yunqian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in 1China and currently live and work in New York. In 2019. My creative journey is deeply rooted in exploring the fluidity of time. My fascination with landscapes and the Earth’s natural phenomena is driven by my interest in the interplay of control and spontaneity, particularly in the context of human interaction with the natural world. My artistic journey began with photography, which serves as the cornerstone from which I explore various mediums, including video works and installations. These forms allow me to express my intrigue with nature and the recurring themes of destruction and renewal.

Upon graduating, I relocated to New York to join a gallery renowned for its specialization in Asian art. Now, in my role as a gallery manager, I’ve immersed myself in the art industry. The gallery has been akin to an educational campus for me, offering a rich environment for collaboration with artists and engagement with their artwork. This experience has not only enhanced my understanding of Asian art but also inspired a profound transformation in my personal approach to art. I’d like to share my journey of being not just an artist but also a practitioner in the art market.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Joining the gallery as an intern presented its challenges, especially since I was quite unfamiliar with the works and artists the gallery represented. My background as a photographer meant that I was well-versed in photography and new media but less so in traditional Asian art, Chinese painting, and calligraphy. This gap in my art history knowledge made the initial transition difficult.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my captivating “Entropy” series, I harness the power of photography to compile a visual archive extracted from the natural world. I employ the medium of photography to amass evidence gleaned from nature. As a co-creator, the dynamic world around me helps interweave the strands of chance together, turning unpredictability into artistic expressions. Water engenders an intricate metamorphosis, eluding easy tracing, perpetually deconstructing and reconstructing itself. This mirrors my creative approach wherein the original photo is dismantled, culminating in a fresh work through reconstruction. Time, crucial in comprehending water’s movement, also shapes my creative process. The irreversible passage of time leaves its indelible mark on my images, evolving from the moment of in-camera capture to the infusion of transformative natural elements. These serve as a direct record, an imprint of the natural features encapsulated on film. The resulting image encapsulates water’s innate force in a visual tableau.

To me, photography goes beyond mere documentation of reality in motion; it transforms into a pathway for delving into the very core of existence itself. It acts as a tool for contemplating the fundamental nature of reality, inviting exploration and introspection. My unwavering belief in the distinctive synergy between photographic materials, light, and substance fuels an innovative approach to authentically capture fleeting moments.
