Today we’d like to introduce you to Siqi Fu.

Siqi Fu

Hi Siqi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always been deeply moved by artworks that have the power to evoke emotions in people. One particular moment that significantly impacted my life was a talk about the animated film “Coco” from Pixar. This conversation led me to reconsider my career path, as I was initially studying computer science. Inspired by its concept art, cultural research, and the creative process, I made the life-changing decision to pursue a career as an artist.

Upon this realization, I embarked on a journey to explore different artistic media to identify my true passion. Soon, I discovered my love for title design and motion graphics. The fluidity of motion graphics and the poetic elements of the title design captivated me. I appreciate how these artistic forms transcend mere images, effectively conveying content and atmosphere to the audience.

Motivated by the artists in this field, I embraced the role of a motion designer myself. Presently, I am dedicated to infusing my artworks with the rich cultural background that defines me. My goal is to create pieces that not only resonate with my personal experiences but also connect with others on a profound level.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Navigating this artistic journey is challenging, especially as I spent a lot of time discovering my true passion in the art world. Exploring different ways to express myself demanded a significant commitment of both energy and time. Although I liked both 2D and 3D, I had to choose one at the beginning, which came with its own challenges.

Learning 3D software was complicated. There were many programs and rendering engines, each with its pros and cons, making it a tough task. While mastering one could help with others, I still needed to figure out the best choice for expressing my artistic vision. Becoming an expert in every stage of the creative process, including lighting, texturing, modeling, and more, proved challenging. Deciding how to use the parts I enjoyed the most to create visually striking art became another tough question. As I delved deeper into my studies, the amount of things to learn kept growing, emphasizing the constant need for further exploration in the realms of art and design.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create 3D artwork, specializing in key visuals for title sequences and motion design. What distinguishes my work is the integration of my cultural background and personal preferences into each piece. Specifically, I find inspiration in traditional Japanese art styles such as Ukiyo-e and traditional Chinese ink painting. Incorporating these elements into my artistic expression is a key focus for me.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
During my master’s program at USC, Professor Michael Patterson played a pivotal role in guiding me toward a career in motion design. He introduced me to the captivating realm of motion design and visual music, unveiling a fresh perspective on animation.
