Daily Inspiration: Meet Anne Demay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Demay.

Anne DEMAY

Hi Anne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am French – from Paris – and I am a narrative photographer and artistic director. This is actually my second life because before this, I spent 10 years in the military police in France. In 2016, I left everything in France to settle in Los Angeles and start my creative agency. You might ask, “How can a military police officer become an art director and photographer?” Well, simply because it was my passion, and with hard work and training, anything can be learned.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t been easy. Firstly, because I’m not American, so I had to go through visa processes and prove that I had enough value and ambition to come and settle here. Then, it required practicing over and over again to prove to potential clients that I was the right person for their projects. And then learning to live in a new country with a foreign language and culture different from mine. It’s the best life and humility experience I’ve had so far.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Today, I am a freelance photographer and art director. These are two roles that complement each other a lot in my opinion because they require observation, precision, and an appreciation for details. I am known for my storytelling. I play a lot with natural light, and my photos always tell a story that everyone can relate to. Therefore, I often capture lifestyle and portraits with a special love for interior design. Playing with curves, colors, materials—I love it. I regularly work for individuals or brands looking for high-quality content for their websites or social media. On the side, I’ve opened an e-shop, or rather a Mood shop, called ADMY. It’s a curation of objects, jewelry, clothing, and artists that I find inspiring and resonate with me. Often second-hand, but not exclusively—I also collaborate with jewelry designers who passionate me. The last project was a collab with a French artist to create a set of thre ceramic plates called “PALM CLUB.” I really enjoyed doing this. I do everything by myself: the curation, the photos, the website, even the accounting, haha. I hope this space becomes a place where people come because they feel inspired.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I always say that LA is a city you have to earn. It’s not like Paris or New York where you’ll find a cool shop or café on every corner just by strolling around. In LA, everything is organized, everything is sought after; there’s a treasure hunt aspect to it (unless you always stay in your neighborhood). I love the idea that in the morning, I can go for a walk by the ocean, have lunch on a rooftop at noon, and be in a hidden bar in Silver Lake in the evening. LA is a city full of creativity, and I love that. The only thing that really gets to me is the traffic.
