Today we’d like to introduce you to Ouriel Lopez.
Hi Ouriel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art has always been my passion since I was a kid. I have been drawing for so long that I can’t remember not doing it. I never thought it would become anything substantial; it was just a hobby that helped me pass the time. I used to draw superheroes and even made up a few of my own. Being a big fan of movies and games, they were a constant source of inspiration. Eventually, drawing and entertainment became two of my most significant passions. I used to draw on any paper I could find, even on the school’s homework and notebook paper, since I didn’t know about Sketchbooks. However, my parents and teachers were unhappy with me because I spent more time drawing than doing homework.
As I entered middle school, I became fascinated with video games and movies. Little did I know that I was drawn to the ones with a gripping storyline. I was inspired to create characters and worlds that could tell a compelling tale through my drawings. However, my family was worried about the stereotypical image of the “starving artist,” and people started nudging me toward graphic design. But one day, I stumbled upon Scott Robertson and Feng Zhu on YouTube. I was intrigued by the idea that art could be a career. It was astonishing to learn that a significant chunk of what appears in films and games is created by artists. I found it amusing that I had never thought much about the idea that artists were behind them.
At that moment, I dedicated myself to improving my skills to turn it into a career. So, I decided to go to OCSA (Orange County School of the Arts) for high school. I aimed to enhance my drawing and painting abilities as much as possible. During my time there, I learned more about being a Concept Designer and became even more determined. For the next four years, I worked tirelessly to improve my fundamentals and focused on building a strong portfolio for the Art Center College of Design. Since many of my favorite Concept Designers had graduated there, it was my dream school.
Once at Art Center, I also began to have my first jobs and gigs and quickly realized that this was something I had wanted to do for a long time; the four years at Art Center were amazing, and learning to improve my design skills was a wake-call when it came to choosing Concept Design as a career path. There was a rocky road due to the pandemic, which led to many exciting opportunities when it came to learning, as it allowed me to have more breathing room to improve my design skills. But all in all, being stuck at home became productive. I was set to graduate in Spring 2023.
As a recent graduate, it’s incredible to reflect on how much I’ve grown since my childhood days of crafting imaginary worlds. Pursuing this passion as a career fills me with excitement and anticipation for all future possibilities.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My road hasn’t been the smoothest. Growing up in Mexico gave me a unique perspective and taught me to appreciate the little things, even though I sometimes forget that in my pursuit. Things got even more complicated when I moved to the US at seven. We moved around a lot, and I’ve lived in various parts of LA and Orange County. My family didn’t have much money, so I felt pressure when it came to choosing a good career path. It’s challenging to tell your parents that you want to be an artist, especially when they’re immigrants. But, my mom was always there to support me in anything I chose as long as it made me happy, and I can’t thank her enough for the support she given me.
But, because of all that, I had to learn to be more disciplined and develop a strong positive mindset to do my best no matter the task, and with consistency and a good work ethic, anything possible. But also to appreciate the now and make the most of it; we often get caught up in our daily routines and forget to appreciate the now.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Concept Designer for Film and Games. My specialty is creating immersive worlds that tell compelling stories and emotionally move the audience. I achieve this through crafting and designing various storytelling elements that contribute to the world’s overall feel, be it environments, vehicles, or props.
Designing and creating worlds that tell a strong story and give a sense of wonder and inspiration is my goal when crafting anything the mind can wonder. I am proud of the care I put into every image I make. Ensure the image and design communicate what’s intended while telling a story. And that someone may be inspired or make their imagination run wild. At the same time, left with some emotional impact.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Developing a good work ethic is essential in any field. However, having a strong system in place and cultivating discipline from the beginning is crucial. Growing up, I did not have much discipline, and it affected me in my early years. Therefore, challenge yourself every opportunity you get, even if you fail. Failure will help you improve and learn faster. Keep learning, as it is a never-ending journey, especially in this career. Learning is essential, so don’t stop learning. Do not give up, and keep moving forward. While chasing your dreams, do not forget to appreciate the present moment. We often forget that it can cost us. Therefore, learn to appreciate your family and friends and stay positive. Life can bring surprises your way, but as long as you keep going, nothing can stop you.
