Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylie Gelfand.
Hi Kylie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey is quite interesting as it’s been short of “easy” but I set out for LA in 2020 intending to pursue a career in sports media. I secured a job at Fox Sports during my Master’s program, so I hastily caught the first flight out of Oregon to chase my dream of becoming a renowned sports reporter. Yet, my perspective shifted when I discovered that the glamorous facade of TV production wasn’t quite as exciting as it seemed.
My focus shifted towards building a career in social media and branding, so I ventured into various other jobs. A year ago, out of the blue, I realized my deep-rooted love for fashion. However, it took a while to understand two crucial details: I can earn a living by shopping and styling others, and secondly, that I can blend my original passion in sports by styling athletes.
Currently, my clientele consists of a diverse mixture of artists and professional athletes. It’s been a real pleasure to be my own boss, mirroring the lifestyle I had envisioned for myself. However, this journey hasn’t been without challenges and is still an upward battle to where I want to be in this industry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Indeed, nothing worthwhile ever comes easily. While my stint in the styling industry may seem brief, it certainly hasn’t always been all sunshine and rainbows, especially when working with professional athletes. It presents its own set of unique challenges. However, I’ve grown and adapted to this niche, continuously learning with each passing day, and I hope to maintain this upward trajectory.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work predominantly as a wardrobe stylist for male athletes and artists, specializing in streetwear. I possess a profound admiration for men’s clothing and joy in styling men. I firmly believe that our clothes can greatly influence our confidence level. Observing the transformation in these men – how the way they carry themselves changes just by wearing the outfits I put together for them – brings me immense satisfaction.
What I take the most pride in is my bold leap into the industry, without the safety net of a background in fashion. Despite my relatively short time in this field, I feel that I’ve already made significant strides in the right direction. The skills and insights acquired during my tenure as a stylist have not only fuelled my personal growth but also helped me to establish an amazing clientele.
How do you think about luck?
I wouldn’t necessarily attribute my current position to luck, as I am yet to reach the height I envision for myself. There are bigger dreams yet to be fulfilled. However, on reflection, I do consider myself fortunate to have found the fashion industry. No other jobs I have had in the past have ignited this burning desire to grow and excel the way fashion does for me. I find myself consumed by thoughts of clothes and fashion for a significant part of most of my days.
