Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Costello.
Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a photographer and writer based in Los Angeles and Byron Bay, Australia. My photography journey started when I lived in New York City and would spend my free time shooting skateboarding. After a few years of the NYC grind, I moved to the north shore of Oahu in Hawaii and become obsessed with big wave surf photography. There I started shooting female big wave surfers like Bethany Hamilton and Raquel Heckert. A spontaneous trip to Australia introduced me to Byron Bay, and I moved out there for a few years, shooting the Australian surf and music scene.
I moved to LA after covid to shoot more music photography and am now based between Silver Lake and sunny Byron Bay.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been pretty lucky with photography and would say it’s been a pretty smooth road. When something feels like a flow state, doing even a little of it at times still feels like a win. Covid was definitely a curveball, and the longest my camera sat neglected in its bag. Other than that, struggles definitely come with taking a leap of faith, especially when your gut says to move to Hawaii on $2,000. What an adventure that was!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer and writer that specializes in the surf and music world. I was just published in the latest Assouline book on Byron Bay, so I’m pretty excited about that. Otherwise, I’m stoked about my big wave surf photography and band shoots which you can find at: avalanchevocals.com. I also run a branding storytelling collective called Sunnwaves Creative. You can check it out at: sunnwavescreative.com.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I think it’s important to showcase women in extreme sports, and that’s my primary focus in the surf photo world.
