Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Labowe.
Hi Emily, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Poppy Undies was born in December 2020 from my desire to foster and create a community steeped in self-love and confidence through embroidered intimates, wear, and paper. The art of hand embroidery, a skill bestowed upon me by my mom a few years ago during Pasover, captivated me instantly. I found immense joy in the thoughtful process of crafting pieces by hand, and this passion became the cornerstone of Poppy. For me, it’s not just about creating lingerie; it’s about infusing each piece with a personal touch and embracing the concept of intimacy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Embarking on the Poppy journey has been both rewarding and challenging. Balancing the desire for authenticity and mindfulness in our creations with the practical aspects of running a business requires careful consideration and adaptability. This was present from the logistics of production to establishing a brand presence. I do love a challenge, and I have an immense curiosity, which innevitably led to a lot of research, and learning, but mostly active trial and error.
The unforeseen journey of being a business owner has only further solidified one of the most important aspects of being an artist—wholeheartedly embracing imperfections in the creative process.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I oversee all aspects of Poppy, from hand-drawing and creating the embroidery artwork to conceptualizing, designing, & sourcing materials for all of our garments. Unlike other brands led by business executives or diverse teams of designers, Poppy is a direct extension of myself—reflecting my interests, desires, personality, and art practice. I am so happy and proud of the community that Poppy has brought together – a diverse grouping of wonderful beings that appreciate the beauty of authenticity.
Any big plans?
