Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciara Lyons.
Hi Ciara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My mom is a nurse and she would come home and tell us about her day. I loved hearing all of her stories and that made me want to become a nurse myself. I have been a nurse for 12 years now, started off as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) and then became a Registered Nurse (RN). I also received my Master of Science in Nursing in 2021. I currently work in Labor & Delivery and recently opened my business as a nurse coach for mothers/parents. After having my own child in 2022 and the experience I had in the initial postpartum period. I knew that I wanted to help provide evidence-informed education and provide support to those families whose perinatal experience is lacking the information they need. I live in the LA Metro area with my husband and young daughter and I am really passionate about getting correct information out into the community, especially to women (mothers).
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey to this point has not been smooth. Nursing school can be rough. I also experienced pregnancy losses between 2019-2021. This was at the same time I was in graduate school. Very stressful time. We ended up doing IVF, thankfully we were able to have our daughter. I know a lot of my counterparts are still praying and waiting. I hold space for you. As I mentioned before, I struggled in the initial postpartum period. This led me to the Mama Coach. I started my business in June and have just been trying to get the word out there about my services since. Another struggle since starting my business is social media. Kudos to the social media managers. I need one. Haha!
As you know, we’re big fans of The Mama Coach. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is about making parenthood easier. As an RN, I have been trained to assess and use my critical thinking skills to come up with solutions. What do we need during pregnancy, postpartum, and as new parents? Solutions! Also, a listening ear and encouragement. I joke that in the hospital that they give you your baby and then boot you out, and then you and your partner are just looking at each other like what do we do now? Well, that’s where I come in. I provide education and support from prenatal care classes, and postpartum/newborn care to Choking & CPR classes and more. I want us parents to be informed with evidence-based knowledge that will make parenting easier. Unfortunately we do not always get this through our traditional model of healthcare. Anyone who knows me, knows I like to keep it real but also I like to make it funny and light-hearted because life is much better when we can laugh at ourselves and the nuances of being parents.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think my best quality is that I am honest, and I truly want people to live their best life and I want to help them be able to do that! If you need I’ll stand in the trenches with you. I’m truly here to help and not pass judgment. For example, if you want to breastfeed cool, formula feed cool, bottle feed- cool, a little bit of everything, let’s do it! Whatever will help you be the best parent you can be I am here to coach you on what the evidence-based research says and support you through that.
