Today we’d like to introduce you to B. Walter Will.
Hi B. Walter, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I choose to live my life in a certain universe with my own pleasures and consequences.
I wanted to write a piece on the complexities of addiction. In this particular avenue, gambling and other vices, drugs, alcohol and sex, with the repercussions it causes to anyone that we care about.
Much of these stories take place here in Southern California, in particular, Los Angeles. I believe the readers will recognize some of these places and some may be introduced to the iconic and eclectic hidden nuggets and hopefully will be fascinated by the complex dynamics of culture, beauty, and diversity that make this city so great. The pleasure and the pain is what this city thrives on. I embrace it wholeheartedly, and it is a major reason why I love it here.
I intertwined failed relationships and aspirations including film, higher education, and excellent career opportunities to the root of the cause, addiction.
My relationship with my father is critically important. It was the gambling that in many matters, kept us so close. Some could argue that there was some success at gambling at times…however, the weight of the loss of people’s trust and the beautiful people and family that were affected by the appetite for the time and energy spent on the addiction between my Dad and myself is staggering, no matter how good the intention or the excuse was. The book I wrote, The Yellow Pinto is dirty realism written in an unconventional pulse raising style. This memoir/narrative of transgressive fiction I hope entertains the reader with exciting, stupefying stories and situations I got myself into.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Sure, there have been obstacles and challenges and it is not a surprise that writing a book is not easy. For me, I knew it was time to come clean. Writing this book was my gateway to telling the stories that are written in the book as if I was speaking to a stranger in a bar or cutting it up with friends or even my nieces and nephews.
As mentioned, Los Angeles is the background to many of these stories. Much of the allure that this city offers also has an underbelly that is not so pretty. Truth be told, the underbelly is where I have spent most of my life inside. I could argue it is the underground that I love most. I think the key element is knowing when to get out, which is never clearly defined. Certainly, through my choosing. This was the reason for many of the downfalls I created for myself.
How to balance a dying father, addictions, multiple relationships, and family issues presented a challenge in writing this novel. Optimistically, we captured some comedy and engaging moments for the reader.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I wanted to write a novel that did not come off like I was on a soap box preaching about the perils of gambling and other addictions.
With almost every other advertisement about fantasy gaming, sports gambling, and casino getaways with glamorous people and surroundings, I think it is a very important subject to bring into a discussion – without judgment or a sober ending.
I would be satisfied that anyone who reads the book, that if even a few who come away with a similar perspective or can take with them some guidance from the paths I endured, then maybe, just possibly, I can save some heartache.
Thank you to Los Angeles and Phoenix for hosting our first two stops of the book signing tour for The Yellow Pinto. The next event will be just south of us in San Diego at 1st Street Bar in Encinitas on January 17th, 2024 with other cities to follow.
