Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Aguilar.
Hi Carmen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Carmen Aguilar, I studied photography in my early 20’s, in Tijuana, Mexico. Even after a few exhibitions and publications, I never took it seriously enough to pursue it as a full-time career. After a 20 some years break, I found myself settled in Orange County, craving to reignite the flame that once burned so brightly.
After enrolling in photography classes to update myself with new technology (I was an analog photographer). I was determined to take my art to new heights. I realized that my passion had only grown stronger over the years. I had developed a unique perspective and a deeper sense of self that was reflected in my captures.
One theme that resonated deeply with me was the beauty and grace of women. Through my lens, I aimed to empower them, giving them a voice to their own stories and capturing their authenticity. Witnessing their pride and joy as they saw themselves through my photographs was nothing short of magical. It was as if, in that moment, they discovered a beauty they hadn’t yet fully embraced.
I stumbled upon an unexpected revelation. I discovered a profound love for documenting the stages of life, particularly maternity and newborns. The way women’s body changes during pregnancy, the glow on their faces, and the sheer joy of motherhood captivated me. I realized that each phase was a unique story that deserved to be celebrated and cherished.
With this newfound passion, I have decided to go beyond photography, and I have enrolled in a workshop to become a postpartum doula. I hoped to nurture mothers and help them navigate this transformative time. The merging of my love for photography and my desire to care for new mothers feels like the perfect fit, a beautiful balance of art and empathy.
And so, I continue to walk my path, telling stories through the lens of my camera. My photography is not just an art form; It’s a means of empowerment, celebration, and nurturing. I strive to capture the essence of womanhood. It is my joy, my purpose, and my way of making a difference one click at a time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening my own business was a daunting endeavor specially being in a new country, everything seemed a little more difficult but nonetheless after navigating the labyrinth of permits, licenses, and legalities felt like a never-ending maze. I slowly and with the help of colleagues, I got to where I needed to be.
Each hurdle I conquered brought me closer to my dream; as I learned to run a business from scratch, I discovered the importance of organization, financial management, and building a network. It wasn’t easy but with patience and perseverance, I’m transforming my passion into a thriving business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is all about creating images that not only serve as cherished memories but also inspire and empower. I create a safe space where women can freely express themselves, allowing their stories to naturally unfold. I am passionate about what I do, and I believe that every woman’s journey deserves to be celebrated and remembered.
Through my artistry, I play a vital role in supporting and uplighting women. I capture the beauty and strength of each woman I photograph, making a lasting impact and inspiring others along the way. It is an honor to be a part of their journey and to preserve their memories for a lifetime.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor was pure luck for me. I remember asking a question in a photographer group, and that’s when Lucia responded. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that we were from the same state and used the same camera brand. We instantly click over our shared passions for photography and food. Since meeting her, I’ve always said that my photography has improved. Lucia has not only guided me In terms of photography techniques but has also provided valuable insights into the business side of things. I’m extremely grateful for our mentorship bond, but most of all our friendship.
