Hidden Gems: Meet Nijeria Thompson of TAP Candle Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nijeria Thompson.

Nijeria Thompson

Hi Nijeria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?

Yea, of course! So I think I am pretty chill with a touch of Ghost Pepper spice. I truly love life and all the things that come with and do my best to be a bringer of light to people I meet. I am in my early thirties, an LA transplant, and have been here a little over 18 months. Which has been interesting! I moved here from Delaware to be with my partner and she had been here for 6 years prior so it helped me acclimate. However, finding my own path here and solid friendships has been an evolution for me. Since I am a lover of HBCUs, music, animals, anime, and all around dope ish I do believe this is the place for me. Being around creatives, learning from them and watching them work just fills my soul! I wanted that creative burst of energy for myself as well. The pandemic aided in my creative spark! In 2020 I started a podcast on Blackness and the HBCU experience; in 2021 I published a book of poetry and it talked through some of my deepest darkest thoughts. That unlocked the box! Then in late 2021 I started my business! What if I could combine my love of things that smell great with my passion for music? I had no clue where to start but I knew it would be a candle. When I had the what I ran to Google and YouTube University looking into the science and what it took to make a candle a candle. I had to decide what kind of wax to use and who knew there were so many!! Now don’t get me wrong, I used to be one of the girlies that would always buy candles from Target, Bath and Body, and Marshalls (insert your fav big box store), but with my research, I had to toss them thangs out! They all had paraffin wax as the base, which can release toxins in the air when burned. Now that I had no candles and winter was coming I thought to do a massage oil candle. Now I was single with a capital S at the time but that didn’t mean I could smell good and massage myself or a lil sneaky link lol. Next stop, Michaels.

After exploring the aisles I bought every fragrance I could find, glass jars, and wicks. I had the rest of my items at home. While listening to music I started smelling and combining different fragrances and writing down what the vibe was I got from them. The experimenting I did in the first two weeks was crazy but I finally had something that could work. That next workday, I took them to my job to get feedback; they were a hit! People started ordering right then! After a few months of massage oil candles selling really well, a leader asked for an actual candle for his significant other. I had that degree from YouTube U, so I knew I could handle it. I made 8-10 actual home decor candles for the first time in my life in January of 2022 and all of them were immediately sold! I was even more excited than before! Now, almost two years later, I have moved across the country from Delaware to California, changed the name of my brand, went through a rebranding, and I am not done yet. I am learning and growing but passionate about bringing nontoxic organic and all-natural candles to the world that have a direct link to music. I am going to unite the world and revolutionize how we interact with candles.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all, I completely stopped my business for almost eight months when I first got to LA. I didn’t have the same suppliers and I was adjusting to life living with a significant other in a new city and being away from all my friends and family. That transition of moving took a toll on me mentally and I couldn’t be creative or drive a business.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about TAP Candle Company?
TAP Candle Company is where music meets candles and vice versa. When our candles are burned, they allow for an immersive experience. Each candle has a QR code on the label that allows you to scan it and listen to the song the candle was scented after. This will transport you into another realm of existence because you get to feel the bass of the song, smell the melodies, and see the harmonies. Each candle is hand-poured to ensure consistency. No matter how many times you buy that candle from us it will smell and feel the same. We currently have two collections: Let’s Chill is our RnB collection that sets a more sensual and chill vibe and we have Let’s Elevate, which grounds you with the power of crystals that infused in the wax but simultaneously elevates your state of mind with the combination of scents.

Our fragrances are unique and cannot be found anywhere but here!

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me most is music and love. We need more of these in the world. Love is universal and combats all the other feelings. While music unites us, no matter the language a song is in I feel what it is saying. I lend my soul to that song. Sometimes it gets a little dark in my mind, sometimes I am super sad, other times I am happy and want to dance! All of it matters, and that is what music does.
