Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan McCormack.
Jordan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My wife and I moved to the Pasadena a little less than seven years ago and have absolutely loved the city. We originally ended up in this area for the ease of access to LA since we both were starting our careers in healthcare and knew that being close to the city would be helpful. Fast forward a few years, I had finished my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and opted to pursue residency training and specialized in orthopedic physical therapy. I was fortunate to pass the board exam and am now a board-certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS). I then opted to pursue an additional year of advanced fellowship training, specifically in spine-related issues. This level of training is something achieved by less than 2% of physical therapists in the US and is an experience that has truly shaped me both personally and professionally.
Throughout this phase in my professional career, my wife and I came to love Pasadena more and more. I was also finding that having spent the past few years working in the traditional healthcare model that people were not getting the care they deserved or the outcomes they desired. People would get pushed through the typical physical therapy ‘conveyor belt’ involving the same table exercises week after week and being passed between volunteers/techs to help manage their ‘physical therapy care’.
Eventually, my wife and I decided to make the commitment to put down roots in this community we had come to love. I decided to take a risk and jump head-first into starting a performance-focused physical therapy clinic that is vastly different than the typical standard of care people receive. Our mission to provide a space where the Pasadena community can stay active and on track with their fitness goals all while conquering their pain or injury.
Now, a little over 18 months into the fast-growing business and we have two physical therapists, a massage therapist, and an admin/marketing coordinator on our team. We heavily attribute our rapid growth to the high level of care we are able to provide and helping people achieve their performance-focused goals by overcoming pain and injuries.
We also pride ourselves on being heavily involved in the local Pasadena community. We work with a large number of local gyms to host free educational seminars, injury assessments, and community events.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every new venture always comes with varying levels of stress and anxiety. Making the jump for a secure job with great benefits was something that heavily concerned me. Thankfully, my wife is extremely supportive and saw how unhappy I was working in the environment I was in. She knew I had a passion to try and push the boundary of what typical physical therapy care has looked like for the past decade.
After some initial financial investment, many hours spent learning the ins and outs of entrepreneurship, and periodic setbacks, we began seeing people truly invest in what we were offering. The best part about this process has been developing a space, culture, and team that is all in on our mission to serve the local Pasadena fitness community through high-quality, performance-focused physical therapy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Movement Clinic: Physical Therapy and Performance?
The Movement Clinic is a performance-focused physical therapy clinic that primarily serves fitness-minded individuals and performance-focused athletes.
We are known for pushing the boundary of physical therapy care beyond just ‘managing your pain’. We develop highly customized physical therapy plans that are designed to both rehab your injuries and build your body’s resilience to be greater than you were prior to being injured.
There are a number of things that set us apart from other local PT clinics. We spend an entire hour with each of our patients completely one-on-one, with no use of volunteers or techs. Our expert physical therapists are highly specialized that have undergone fellowship-level training. We also provide robust rehab and strength programming that addresses the individual as a whole as opposed to being hyper-focused on their area of injury or pain.
We highly encourage those who have been dealing with long-standing or repetitive injuries to start by jumping on a Discovery Visit phone call. During this phone call, you will speak directly with one of our physical therapists to get an idea of what exactly you have been dealing with and how we can best help you. This helps us funnel you to whatever is most appropriate for you, whether it be our performance physical therapy, massage therapy, personal training, or a hybrid plan of multiple services.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There are literally TOO many people to credit for the success we have had thus far. Obviously, none of this would be possible without the amazing support of my wife, Elyssa. Second, without our amazing team we would not have the ability to have such a significant impact on our local community. Dr. Jake, our other performance physical therapist, Krysta, our massage therapist, and Amber our admin/marketing coordinator and personal trainer are all phenomenal in their own right. They each provide so much to our company culture and customer experience.
Mentorship has also been a pivotal role in our success over the last 18 months. Because listing all their contributions would be too long, and there are too many names to list — I’ll just list some of their names:
Danny Matta
Yves Gege
EO3 Fit
Rachel Nicholaison
Jay Bhatt
Clare Frank
Ernie Linares
Denis Dempsey
The APU DPT Program — Namely Michael Wong and Marshall Lemoine
And countless others… Again, there are too many names to list.
