Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Griffin.
Hi Adam, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my business right out of college in 2013, offering both freelance photography and graphic design services as a side hustle to my full-time job working in the non-profit world. I’d started learning more about the wedding industry around the same time by assisting several friends in the San Luis Obispo Country area where I was living by second shooting events with them and even taking on some gigs with a florist and a local catering company. Then around five years ago, I decided I wanted to step away from my 9–5 job and invest all of my time into my own business by growing my brand as a wedding photographer based here in SoCal. Since then I’ve had the opportunity to work with hundreds of couples and individuals to capture their most important life milestones from destination weddings to graduations to family holiday card sessions!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely been a lot of ups and downs! There was a learning curve to setting up a profitable business model (especially in such an expensive market like LA), learning to organize my business around quarterly tax payments, constantly finding new networks of potential clients, and then when the pandemic came along, it obviously really threw a wrench in things for a lot of small business owners. I’ve been fortunate though to have bounced back really well from 2020 to see my business grow enormously in the last several years…to the point I’m often overbooked some months and have to refer inquiries out to other peers in the area!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in a hybrid style of capturing weddings that’s both editorial and magazine-worthy but leans more toward a documentary, fly-on-the-wall type of photography. It’s allowed me to create some truly stunning images of my couples peppered within a full gallery of true-to-life images from their special day where nothing seems forced or fake. One of my favorite types of feedback I often get from clients is that they love how genuinely happy they look in all of their photos together and that all the candid moments from their big day are captured so well. Wedding days go by really quickly, and it’s so great to hear from a couple that they get transported back to the day and are crying at home, looking through all the beautiful moments they otherwise might have forgotten about.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a precocious, independent, and creative little nerd to be honest. You’d often find me drawing at the kitchen table or with my nose buried in a book upstairs on my bunk bed. I was obsessed with learning and would have unofficial competitions with my dad and siblings watching Jeopardy after dinner (and would often win), and I was lucky enough to have parents that let me bounce from one sport or interest to another as I figured out what I wanted to do. Even when I got to college, I ended up changing majors, and even now at 33 I’ve considered going back to school for a completely different graduate degree program simply because my appetite for growing and learning is never satisfied.
