Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Boucher.
Derek, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been involved in some form of marketing since I was about 15 years old (I helped my boss at the local surf shop facilitate the placement of those old-school advertising brochures that were found in hotel lobbies). I started at this surf shop as a teenager and formed friendships with many people during these years. This became my gateway into various corporate marketing roles in the action-sports & fashion industry. I learned early that relationships were the key to success. My dad always said, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” I still hold onto that mantra 20+ years into my career.
After decades of working my way through the seemingly never-ending highway of marketing titles (Assistant, Coordinator, Manager, Director, VP) I found myself in a position in which I could never have dreamed possible; working for myself. Digital marketing had been my forte for the better half of the previous decade and I saw an opportunity to offer my skills to clients in everything from website design to email campaigns. I was fortunate enough to have a few close friends give me the opportunity to handle an assortment of digital marketing initiatives as a freelancer for their businesses. This essentially launched my new career.
Has it been a smooth road?
The highs and lows of starting your “own thing,” at least for me, would look like a very active seismograph. Some days present a great deal of challenge while others are filled with positivity and a clear path to success with not only my own business but also for my clients.
Digital marketing can be a challenge of its own, especially considering that it changes from day to day (some would say hour to hour). Keeping up with the latest software, app, plug-in, platform, advertising strategy & much more is almost a full-time job in itself.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with DB Creative Services – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My services include website design & development, email marketing campaigns, graphic design, e-commerce, social media management, brand strategy and more. I aim to be a one-stop digital shop for clients that are looking to inject innovation & creativity into their digital footprint while engaging consumers and driving business results.
I also have a side “passion project” business with two partners called Base Camp, a “Pop-Up” camping resort that takes place in Indio, CA during the April music festival season (www.welcometobasecamp.com). We convert about 10 acres of land into a little community and feature a ton of curated amenities such as fully furnished bell tents, music performances, restaurant, cocktail bars, pool parties, festival transportation and much more. Base Camp fits nicely within my day to day business as I am able to act as my own client and provide the necessary digital marketing and branding initiatives necessary to continue our success. Base Camp acts as a great case study for everything I have to offer.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I have lived in Orange County (minus a few years while attending the University of San Diego) since I was 10 years old. I also spend quite a bit of time in Los Angeles for both work and play. I am big into music, food & wine so it makes me quite happy to know that the OC scene for these things is developing rapidly. We even have some LA natives moving down to our neck of the woods to help facilitate this cultural development.
