Today we’d like to introduce you to Zilan Lin.

Zilan Lin

Hi Zilan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey is a fusion of diverse influences and experiences. I hail from China, where I began my creative voyage through academic painting. I moved to Vancouver, Canada, and immersed myself in 2D and Experimental Animation in college. Later on, my desire of exploring more techniques for building visual storytelling led me to New York City, where I embarked on a fresh chapter as a CG artist. This move allowed me to immerse myself in the digital arts, blending innovative technology with my traditional roots. What sets my work apart is the rich tapestry of cultural influences I draw from. The blend of my Chinese heritage, Canadian animation experiences, and the artistic vibrancy of New York City infuses my creations with diversity and creative vision.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been anything but a smooth, linear path—it’s more of a detoured adventure. The road I’ve traveled has taken me on unexpected twists and turns, teaching me many lessons along the way. And I believe it’s an ongoing one; it’s a continuous evolution. One of my earlier struggles was my initial apprehension about CG. I had assumed it would be a complex, computer-driven domain. However, I discovered a deep love for its challenges and the boundless creative possibilities it offered. This shift in perspective has been a significant turning point in my journey, propelling me forward with renewed enthusiasm.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a CG Artist, Motion Designer, and 2D Animator based in NYC. Additionally, I take on the director role in my own short films, allowing me to explore and express my creative vision. What sets me apart is my diverse skill set and background. I have a unique combination of experience in both 2D and 3D, coupled with a foundation in traditional painting. These varied influences converge in my work, enabling me to bring a fresh and dynamic perspective to my projects.

My multicultural experiences have played a pivotal role in shaping my artistry. They’ve instilled an open-minded approach, a willingness to embrace new techniques, and a commitment to exploring fresh perspectives in my creative endeavors.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I don’t have a specific medium to recommend. I would say to read, see, and walk as much as possible. To do the best in both work and life, I believe in immersing myself in the world around me. In the digital realm, I do spend time on platforms like Pinterest, Behance, and Artstation. These platforms expose me to a wide range of creative works and styles, which is incredibly enriching for my own artistic development.

Additionally, I follow film festivals like Annecy and other indie animation festivals. These events consistently showcase innovative works that serve as a wellspring of inspiration. They have a remarkable way of pulling me away from the demands of commercial projects and reigniting my creative fire. Ultimately, for me, it’s about staying curious and open to the wealth of creative resources that surround us.
