Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Audrey Davidheiser.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always loved psychology. When I was little, I daydreamed that one day I’d sit across the room from someone who would confide their problems in me. (Who but a psych geek would fantasize like that?) But since every good story always involves an unexpected turn of events, instead of pursuing psychology right away, I took a detour—which resulted in a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry. I’ve since obtained a PhD in Clinical Psychology, and am happy to share that as of 2009, my private practice is open to the public.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To say it has been a smooth road is like saying “I adore how us drivers can sit still on the 101 for hours every day.” Like other business owners, there have been dry seasons where I have had very few clients and lean months. The struggles are real, but so are the joys of improving our clients’ quality of life.
Aim for Breakthrough – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I and my associates provide psychotherapy from a depth, or insight-oriented, perspective. This means that rather than attempting to provide superficial solutions, we dig deep and find out the root causes that hinder our clients from achieving the life they long for. I specialize in helping survivors navigate the aftermath of their abuse. I also enjoy working with single adults and graduate students. Supervising the next generation of psychologists is a joy and honor for me.
Is there anything that sets us apart from others? In addition to our fervent care for our clients, it would be the know-how to integrate spiritual matters into the therapy room. Our team is trained to understand how spirituality interacts with emotional health. Clients who are spiritually/religiously minded have tended to appreciate this component of our service.
Our focus on serving single adults may also be a unique attribute. I have a firsthand experience when it comes to living as a single woman for quite some time, which compelled me to start a group for singles who wish to be married. This isn’t a dating scheme, by the way. The idea of meeting as a group is that in this safe space, everyone can share (and receive gracious feedback on) their insecurities and hang-ups, in a way that would better prepare them to land a permanent partner.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
As a psychologist, I count my clients’ self-report of enjoying a more fulfilling life as success. The definition may vary from one client to the next: the Tuesday client might be less depressed; the Thursday client might find social interactions easier to handle; and the Friday client might finally score a date after a long spell of being single. The bottom line is if they find that they’re taking steps to advance their journey toward a satisfying life, I would do a little jig. (Mentally. I’m so not a dancer.)
