Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Orea.
Hi Alex, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been a creative animal. I work in film, photography, music, fashion, graphic design, and illustration. I’m no stranger when it comes to my imagination. Some would say I’m a Swiss army knife or chameleon. Given that innate curiosity, I always knew I wanted to dedicate my life to the arts. The dream is to make provocative and moving feature films, animated series and ultimately create my own empire.
I’m a natural storyteller, world builder, and image maker. My knack for image-making goes back to my illustrations as a kid. It’s all about bringing my ideas to life for people to experience with the senses. I love science fiction, dark fantasy, and emotional character-driven stories. My favorite director currently is Denis Villeneuve (Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Arrival).
In my day-to-day life, I’m always working on multiple projects at once. I’ll go through periods where I focus on making music, directing, or picking up a new hobby. Recently, I directed two music videos that will be releasing soon! I really put all my energy into the work I make. I was lucky to be a part of a program, Mentoring Matters, under a mentorship by director Ebeneza Blanche from Smuggler. So, to have my work recognized by him means a lot. It’s only the beginning of many good things to come.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a creative, it’s hard not to let self-doubt creep in. It’s easy to compare yourself to your peers that seem farther ahead than you. It’s not an easy industry if you don’t come from a well-off family or have connections. In order to create opportunities, I fund my passion projects on my own. It sometimes feels my efforts go unrecognized, like I’m on a plateau. Also, the reality of being a human and paying bills isn’t always easy either. All that matters is having talent, dedication, and hunger for your goals. If there is a flame inside of you, don’t let that die.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m really proud of my previous film project, Time Dilation. It’s an experimental short about music, time, and existence. I take pride in my ability to pull from so many sources of inspiration. For this project, I combined quantum physics, Buddhist philosophy, 90’s fashion, and my love of electronic music.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
