Today we’d like to introduce you to Dietmar Kohl.
Hi Dietmar, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Germany but grew up in Vienna and studied photography in Vienna, worked in photography in Vienna. Visited USA 1989. I was inspired by my Father; he started me. Not sure about the style, but it’s more close to reality documentary also sophisticated creative. Fashion photography because I was always surrounded by young fashion designers, hairdressers and models of Vienna. Working with fashion models is sometimes easy, sometimes difficult, but you have to work together to create the right results for all involved and fulfill the expectations of the industry… takes a bit of everything to get a good fashion photograph… starting with the designer, models, makeup, hair and location… not to forget the photographer who has to put it all together in one frame even when there is none of the above, and you have to do a little magic all by yourself to show the product in the best light…
My inspiring photographers were Helmut Newton and David Bailey to keep it pretty simple but impressive to catch what you see Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Norman Parkinson, Cecil Beaton Horst Richard Avedon Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, and more… developed my style by Experience and experimenting using my tools in different ways… but stay simple which I liked the best… the Lessons I learned along the way is that there is always something new to encounter and learn no matter how much you think you learned and encountered already… Fashion photography to me means showing the human culture of the times and the will to dress and impress and express and to transfer that and create the Image…
Never been at the Met Gala, but it’s probably just like many other Fundraiser Galas celebrating the world of Fashion and American fashion designers and stars still organized by Anna Wintour. I preferred British Vouge then… but I didn’t look at the Magazines for a long time now when everything went digital… also printed magazines became thinner too. Yes would be fun to meet Anna Wintour and have a little chat Ja… I would tell her my personal ideas and impressions point of view and that it would be fun to create some new work for her!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never a smooth road all the time I don’t think so yes had a couple of moments through time but you learn from struggle, grief, failure, and love… still can recover but takes quite a while and other humans help and support love me two times I am going away… yes love is my struggle live and love my motto trust and believe, fight the bitterness and use it all in artwork!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I did a lot of fashion photography, portrait jewelry work architecture landscapes streetwork, and graphic artwork. I learned all together in Graphic ArtSchool in Vienna. I am proud of my parents who supported all that to start with proud to be alive and breathing and still wanting to get my message of living and loving out there with my work that’s for sure my profession as a human being!
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Well, they can contact me on FB or Instagram through my email but mostly, it is people I meet when socializing and I did a lot of that before but got interrupted by the years of isolation, so starting again also another problem is that many people don’t want to pay for my 40 years of experience and skills these days but I get through those times and will get better again!
