Today we’d like to introduce you to Vidhi Bansal.
Hi Vidhi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a World Builder and Real-Time 3D Visualizer specializing in crafting immersive experiences for entertainment productions, short films, and game cinematics. My fascination with worldbuilding, architecture, and storytelling dates back to my childhood. I used to lose myself in the realms of dystopian stories, science fiction, and fantasy, imagining myself as a resident of these captivating universes.
My educational journey led me to study architecture at CEPT University in India, where I gained valuable insights into the intricacies of real-world design. However, I yearned for a more imaginative and unrestrained creative process. This desire ultimately led me to SCI-Arc’s Fiction and Entertainment course.
At SCI-Arc, I had the opportunity to embark on a transformative path. I designed and art-directed my very own visual short film, a project that allowed me to delve deep into the creation of dystopian worlds that concealed their darker truths behind stunning facades. Throughout this experience, I not only honed my design skills but also discovered an unwavering passion for the art of world-building. It was a profound journey that revealed invaluable insights into my creative process and solidified my love for crafting imaginative realms.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been far from smooth. Summoning the courage to pivot from conventional architectural practice to pursue my passion was a daunting decision. It entailed leaving the comfort of home and a stable career to venture to a foreign land, aiming to establish myself in an industry known for its unforgiving nature. Moreover, competing with seasoned industry experts who had dedicated years to honing their craft was undeniably intimidating.
The initial months post-graduation were marked by stress and uncertainty. I reached out to every potential employer in the field, tirelessly advocating for myself, yet received minimal responses and battled constant self-doubt due to the relentless rejections. Earlier this year, the entertainment industry was hit by strikes, significantly impacting my work prospects. The job pool shrunk to a mere fraction of its usual size, leaving me with the sense of starting anew and broadening my network beyond the entertainment sector. This transition brought along a fresh wave of self-doubt and turmoil.
However, despite these formidable challenges, I firmly believe that every hardship has been a worthwhile part of my journey. I have had the pleasure of working with some exceptionally talented creatives and designers, and the exposure has meant the world to me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a real-time 3D artist, which means that I specialize in the art of crafting and directing immersive worlds using real-time game engines, with a particular focus on Unreal Engine. Over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege of designing captivating worlds for entertainment productions collaborating with renowned brands such as FIFA, Tommy Hilfiger, Red Bull, Usher, and many more. Additionally, I’ve lent my creative expertise to the realm of animations and motion graphics, contributing my talents to projects for respected names like Marvel Snap, Grounded, Xbox, and Samsung.
My journey has been marked by a dedication to honing both my creative and technical skills within the game engine pipeline. Drawing from my background in architecture, I bring a discerning eye for composition and lighting that distinguishes my work, infusing each project with a unique sense of design composition.
Looking ahead, my aspirations are firmly rooted in becoming an art director specializing in game engines for short films and virtual production. I’m driven by the desire to continue designing and crafting worlds and experiences that tell thought-provoking stories, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the realm of virtual storytelling.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about LA, as a 3D artist working in the entertainment industry, is the city’s unique blend of creativity and innovation that permeates every corner. LA isn’t just a place; it’s a thriving ecosystem where dreams are born and brought to life on the big screen.
First and foremost, the diversity of talent and perspectives here is incredible. You can walk into a coffee shop and overhear conversations about screenplays, visual effects, or animation techniques. It’s like living in a real-life brainstorming session, and that constant flow of ideas is incredibly inspiring.
Moreover, LA’s vibrant arts and culture scene never ceases to amaze me. From world-class museums and galleries to street art that surprises you around unexpected corners, there’s an artistic pulse that keeps my creative juices flowing. The city’s rich history in entertainment also means there’s an unending stream of events, premieres, and expos that cater to my passion for the industry.
But perhaps what stands out the most is the energy of LA itself. The city has an infectious optimism that encourages you to dream big and push the boundaries of your craft. The gorgeous weather and stunning landscapes are like a daily dose of motivation, reminding me that anything is possible under the California sun.
