Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Rothan.
Hi Sara , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all began when I moved to LA – knowing no one and having nothing about 12 years ago. And in the course of getting sewing and pattern gigs on Craigslist, I found out that some of the high-end clothing brands outsourced some of their alterations to freelancers. I reached out to a couple of my favorite brands, which ultimately resulted in a full-time alterations manager position at Carolina Herrera. A couple of years later, I left to start my own alterations, pattern work, design, and consultation business. That is what I have been doing since. A variety of projects that keep me interested in my work. No day is identical to another. Everything from red carpet alterations, wedding gown re-design, custom gowns, a custom flower girl business, Petals by QueSara, and most recently launched, The Dress Rescue. Which focuses on rescuing dresses that are on the brink of not making it to the alter – because of timing, previous problems with alterations or some other mishaps.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Generally – I can’t complain. There have of course been challenges but there has always been a steady flow of work and I have been fortunate to receive plenty of word-of-mouth referrals and repeat clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One of the most valuable skills I have cultivated is listening to a client’s needs and desires. I am able to serve them better by sussing out their aesthetic and what they want to accentuate or de-emphasize on their body. One of the greatest compliments I can receive is to hear how their anxiety and concerns were addressed, their fears were assuaged, that they felt heard and were no longer worried about the outcome of their gown(s).
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
To trust my gut feeling/ instincts.
