Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Hamilton.
Hi Kat, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a singer, songwriter, and recording artist here in Los Angeles. I grew up in the Bay Area and have since lived in six cities. I initially moved out here in 2018 during a transition time in my career. I had mostly been in bands previously and was skeptical about my solo artist journey. Since then, I’ve found my footing in my solo artistry, and I’m also in a duo called Guyville. In addition to that, I teach music and write poetry. I also book and occasionally host a singer-songwriter night called Writers Round Los Angeles.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth is the last word I would think of when I think of the road I’ve been on. I think this career takes way more than it gives. You can write a song you’re in love with, pay to have it recorded at the best studio or mixed by a top engineer and it still doesn’t give you back the energy you put in. My experience in the music industry has been all about adapting to change. I’ve had canceled shows, lost opportunities, sudden financial changes, songs that never come out, deals that you think are a sure thing that don’t pan out, and plenty of heartbreak. It feels like you have to simultaneously be vulnerable and made of steel at the same time. If I didn’t feel called to do it, I’d go into a career that makes me way happier.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer, songwriter, curator, poet, and recording artist. I think I’m known for being really vulnerable with my audience. At least, that’s how I try to approach all of my projects. It always makes me feel like I’ve done my best if someone feels like they know me better after my set. I’d also like to think that people know me for bringing communities together in LA. I’m in a duo called Guyville and booked a songwriter night called The Writers Round’. I’m pretty proud of the ways my career has evolved here. If I had to pick one thing I’m most proud of, I think it’s maintaining my sobriety. Removing alcohol has made so much room for more meaningful joys in my life. This is a hard career and sometimes it feels like I could really use a drink. I’m really proud that I don’t give in to that feeling. I think what sets me apart is that I look at my career through the lens of who I want to be, not just how to make it big. I want to leave behind a positive impact when I go. I know it sounds morbid, but I think about that in every aspect of my career. When I play shows, I’m focused on how to respect the crowd instead of whether or not I’m good enough for them. I’m constantly focused on being there for my audience.
