Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Sanchez.
Hi Vanessa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a creative person, but the pandemic really jump-started Nice Cosas! My husband had just been laid off, and we were a single-income family. I’d had a little shop on Etsy for years, but it was mostly a creative outlet. We decided to launch a website selling face masks and everything took off from there.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The life of a small business owner can definitely be bumpy! We really had to formulate a plan early on because we knew selling face masks was not a viable business long term. I’d always loved sewing and fabric and knew I wanted to get into the fabric business. Selling it and eventually designing our own original prints.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The bulk of our business right now is selling Latino culture-inspired fabric. As a creative person, part of selling fabric is showcasing it, which is one of my favorite parts of what we do! I specialize in layered appliqué and have used this technique to create some of our best-selling products, notably our pillow dolls. Since we focus on carrying mostly Latino culture fabric designs, our customers know they are getting a great selection in one place. We added a few of our original fabric designs to the mix this year and will continue expanding that.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have found that connecting with other creatives online through our social media platforms has helped immensely. It may seem strange at first, but reaching out via private message to creative people I admired really worked for me. It connected me with other small business owners and gave me a sounding board when I needed one.
