Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Holborow.
Hi Seth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My entire life, I always had a passion for taking photos, during my travels, of events and cars, or just anything that had intrigued me. Once I had got to my later high school years I started to take more and more of an interest to Photography. My best friend and I would be out on the sidelines of the football games photographing the games, and in 2017 is when I had spontaneously picked up my first professional camera. Since then it’s been a constant spiral of obtaining gear, more cameras, photos, perfecting and learning new skills, and of course the clients to go with them! I currently use my photography as a side income to my daily 9-5, meeting new people along the way whether I am working with people one-on-one, events, or photographing cars. Working with clients and their vehicles has been my primary work, which has been amazing seeing all the different types of cars, builds, and learning about the time and money people have put into their vehicles. Second to photographing cars would be portraits of people. Working with people has been a thrill. I am a people person, and I have met a ton of new people and supporters along the way. I have learned new styles and new poses along with new challenges, always adapting to lighting and other inconsistent variables both with people and cars.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth sailing road, there is always new obstacles and new spur of the moment changes that I need to adapt to, and also photography has taught me a lot to go with the flow and learn how to quickly adapt. On-site with clients, there have been times we needed to change locations last minute due to construction, due to overpopulation of the area, lighting has changed, and we went from a sunny style shoot to now we are working in the rain and everything changes both on set and in post-production. Another challenge is going through 1200+ photos and seeing something that could have been shot differently, either posing with models differently, a photo coming out not as crisp or in focus as it could have been, angles of cars slightly off for the environment, etc. Regardless, I have learned to work around it, make the best of the content we have shot and of course, deliver photos that will bring a lifetime of smiles.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a photographer specializing in car photography who is back and forth between the LA and Phoenix areas. Many of my photos revolve around vehicles, both cars and motorcycles alike, and getting to know the story behind the build for these. I enjoy photographing rolling shots, capturing the movement of the vehicles in a still image, to me it feels that it really brings the car to life and is less of an angle and more of being drawn into the photo. Setting myself apart, I will spend the time tailoring the shoot to my clients by making sure the locations would be most complementing, not just “I have A, B, and C spots, what looks good?” Another thing, I will converse about the build, where they started, why they chose the vehicles they did, where they plan on taking it past what I know them to have today, etc. The last thing I will mention in regards to this, I will send clients enough photos along the way as I edit to hype them up, but not enough to give away the final product. Not so much as to brand-wise, but what I am most proud of is seeing my photos on display away from the social media platforms and more so of the poster prints at their homes and other displays where they are cherished day in and day out. To my readers: If you got this far, it means your share the same passion I do, at least to an extent. Reach out to me, share your start-ups, share your questions, vehicle builds, etc. I started with a phone camera with lots to learn, and now I have a few professional cameras, with a little less to learn than I did yesterday but still tons more to go from here.
What makes you happy?
Aside from the joys of photography, My fiancé and family bring me happiness and have been my biggest supporters through everything, along with them I find joy in working on my car, shopping, traveling and creating new memories.
