Today we’d like to introduce you to Simone Henderson.
Hi Simone, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started doing hair at 12/13. It was just a hobby. I enjoyed challenging myself to achieve the hairstyles that celebrities were wearing on me and my friends. My senior year in high school, someone stopped my friend and I; she complimented our hair and asked how much we paid. How much omg people are willing to pay me, I thought. At that moment, I took my hobby seriously. That next year while enrolled in college, being the ambitious Capricorn I am, I enrolled in Cosmetology full-time as well. Over the next seven years, I utilized my degree and eventually became a bank assistant manager, all while still doing hair on the side. In 2008, I was laid off and with the support of my family, I finally started to do hair full-time. Since then, I have been featured in magazines, done hair for music videos, traveled the world, have celebrities clients, owned a salon and have trained and employed many amazing talented stylists. Today I travel to do hair and make custom wigs. I have recently ventured into making medical-grade wigs specifically for women of color.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My road is still bumpy. I am a self-employed single mother. Do I need to explain more. The majority of the obstacles that I have faced as far as business have always become a lesson that I have learned from and make the appropriate pivots. Over the years, the hardest struggle has been finding the balance with my family and work. And even more so, taking good care of myself. This is a constant obstacle that I have learned to work at every day.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist, wig maker, and educator in my field. I am known for my creative hairstyles and custom wigs. What I love most though is being trusted to make women of all walks of life feel their most beautiful and powerful selves on their important days. What sets me apart is that I am consistent and reliable. I am also beyond grateful for the trust given to me by my clients.
How do you think about luck?
I do not believe in luck!! I believe that my consistency and talent has spoken volumes for me and that opportunities have shown up because of that. And if there is something that I wanted to do that didn’t present itself I asked for the opportunity. A closed mouth does not get fed.
