Meet Kevin Carpio, Maribel Corona, and Abel Velazquez of The Ruthless Wolves

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Carpio, Maribel Corona and Abel Velazquez.

It all started with a breakup. They all had been in previous bands that didn’t work out or weren’t going anywhere. One goal they had in mind was to keep on playing music no matter what. They all grew up in fairly nice neighborhoods. Maribel (the band’s bassist) grew up and still resides in South Gate California. Abel (the singer and guitarist) grew up in South Gate as well but now lives in Downey Ca. Kevin (the drummer) of the band grew up in different cities but he mostly had his fair youth shenanigans in Montebello California. Originally Maribel was a rhythm guitarist for an old band called The Union Station where, she was introduced to Kevin through an old bandmate that band ended up breaking up. So they decided to start their own. They didn’t want to stop playing and from there the relationship continued. Kevin and Maribel were on the hunt for a guitarist/singer their friend Jr the bassist of the band continued with them both but he was in another band during that time. They would clash a lot on picking practice dates so Jr eventually had to decide what band he wanted to focus on and he ended up choosing the other band. Long story short they couldn’t find another bassist that was a good fit for them so, Maribel jumped on bass nearly knowing anything but the basics… Maribel knew Abel from High school and then they started jamming out, they would play in random studios paying stupid fees for 2 hours. They then decided they wanted to take things to the next level and invested in their own studio. From there they wrote all of their material from cover songs down to Original songs.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the beginning, everything was a struggle from the get-go. From trying to find gigs to losing our Jr the first bands bassists. Trying out lead singers and even one of them came to try out super wasted out of his mind. Practicing was an issue as well, the only time we had to practice was at a shitty studio that we paid stupid money for, for shitty gear that nearly electrocuted one of us. We lost our drummer for almost 5 months because he was taking care of some bullshit. Coming up with a band name was such a headache because all the good names were taken until we finally came around and agreed on the name The Ruthless Wolves.

The Ruthless Wolves – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are in the business of music. We brand and market our band. We make our profit through selling merchandise but nothing can put a price on making a connection with a stranger.Knowing that what we created made them feel a joy, a chill or any emotion just by hearing one of Kevin’s danceable drum beats. One of Maribel’s poppy bass lines or Abel’s classic rock/punk guitar riffs. That is the most satisfying feeling ever. Yeah were not known. Yeah we’re not big Rock stars but we honestly don’t care. When we go out there and perform to a semi-big crowd or just even 2 people who are regulars at a bar we just love playing our instruments. It’s like a heart beat. We follow the tempo with our hearts hopefully making people feel what we feel when we play our songs.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To not have a day job. Just make music as a living.

TO inspire a new generation to kick and take names and not give a fuck about going to college, getting a job, having two and a half kids, white picket fences, 401Ks and waiting till you ultimately drop dead from an aneurysm or a heart attack.

We just want to live it out. Be RUTHLESS…
