Meet Peiwen Wang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peiwen Wang.

Peiwen Wang

Hi Peiwen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a fashion stylist based in Los Angeles. I have extensive experience styling for editorials, music videos, and red-carpet events. I was born and raised in Chengdu, China, and moved to Los Angeles in 2016 to attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), where I earned degrees in fashion design and fashion marketing. I’ve been working in the fashion industry since I was 18, starting as a buyer, designer, and then as a stylist.

Growing up, I was enamored with the world-renowned fashion houses, and my family would often go to shopping malls, where I would dream about choosing my own outfits. My mother always had a great sense of style and made sure that I learned about fashion and style growing up. I was also exposed to American pop culture by my aunt and mother through music and movies. Pop artists like Britney Spears, Madonna, and Beyoncé had a big influence on me. I was always excited to see what they were wearing on TV or during concerts. Later, I discovered Alexander McQueen through Lady Gaga when I was 13 or 14. McQueen’s Savage Beauty inspired me to pursue a career in fashion, and I started reading fashion magazines, learning about different designers, fashion history, and watching countless runway shows.

My love for fashion led me to meet people in the industry during my teenage years, who introduced me to independent designers and interesting designs. I tried my best to attend fashion events and shows during fashion weeks and started collecting original pieces to build up my personal archives, both as a means to inspiration and for my own interests.

When my photographer friend Hailey, who I met in college, asked me to style a photoshoot for fun in late 2020, I realized my true passion was fashion styling. Our first shoot was picked up by a fashion magazine, and we continued shooting and building my styling portfolio. That’s when I decided to become a full-time fashion stylist. Before that, I always enjoyed styling my friends with my own collection and shopping for my family.

Over the past few years, with my portfolio getting bigger and more people seeing my works, I’ve made many connections and collaborated with creative individuals, which has helped me develop and grow as a fashion stylist. I’ve learned that not only are skills, knowledge, and professionalism important in this industry, but connections are also crucial. They can bring you many great opportunities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, my journey as a fashion stylist has been smooth but not without its challenges. One of the main struggles I face is the constant pressure to improve and do better than my last project. This requires me to spend time analyzing my work and identifying areas for improvement. Another challenge I have faced is being an introvert, which has made it difficult for me to communicate effectively with collaborators and clients. However, I have learned that communication is key to a successful collaboration and I’ve worked on improving my communication skills. Additionally, I have learned that having a trustworthy team is important, they can help you so much during work. Finally, the fashion industry is not as glamorous as it may seem on TV or in magazines. It takes a lot of time, energy, and money to complete a project, and the work hours are often unpredictable.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a unique and recognizable style, where people always can tell it’s my work. I’m not afraid to break the rules and be the different one in the crowd. I always encourage my friends, collaborators and clients to try new things and be different. That also sets me apart from others in the industry. I am known for my strong sense of style, which is always evolving as I keep trying new things while staying true to my own aesthetic. I take pride in my past works and am always excited to create something new and better and keep moving forward. I am most proud of how far I have come in my career and being able to make a living out of my passion.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I don’t know if it counts as a childhood memory since this happened when I was 14/15 years old. In early 2012, I ran away from school because I was sure about what I wanted in life. I didn’t want to and couldn’t stand wasting my time any longer studying “boring subjects”, such as Math, Chemistry and Physics at school, and instead wanted to invest my time in achieving my goals. Despite being seen as a rebel or a bad student, I knew what I wanted and asked my parents to send me to study art full-time, while I learned about fashion at home. I also expressed my desire to study fashion abroad in the future. My parents were supportive and decided to send me to New York City alone to see if I really liked it there. This experience helped my family take my dream seriously and allowed me to be a kid who was different from others. I was super proud of this experience and myself for standing up for my own dream at a young age. This experience was a defining moment for me and helped shape my future.
