Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Abraham.
Hi Jacob, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Originally hailing from Kerala, India, I discovered my passion for music at a young age when my mother gifted me my first guitar. High school brought my entry into a band, igniting a deep love for music. This led me to form my band, Copper Planet, which achieved remarkable success, performing in over 100 venues all across India and releasing four singles. We also performed in approximately 60 national competitions during that time, and many times won first place. For example, Copper Planet won 1st place at the Echoes 2017 national battle of the bands competition that was presented by the Central Bank of India.
Through self-production and recording for Copper Planet, I developed a keen interest in Audio Engineering and music production. Driven by this newfound fascination, I made a pivotal decision to relocate to Los Angeles and further develop my foundation as a musician. Since then, I have honed my skills as both an audio engineer and a lighting designer for live shows in the heart of Hollywood.
Simultaneously, I’ve collaborated with fellow musicians, serving as a session guitar player. This year, I eagerly anticipate releasing new music with Copper Planet, as well as showcasing some solo work. These endeavors exemplify my artistic growth and ambition.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Wish I could say it was! Coming from a traditional Indian family, I was expected to get a job as a doctor or an accountant like my parents and keep music as a hobby. Breaking the mold on me was one of my biggest struggles. Eventually, as I started making a name as a musician with Copper Planet, my folks finally decided to cave in and let me follow my dreams.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer-instrumentalist with various influences, at the moment my top three will be David Maxim Micic, Karnivool, and Tool. My work with Copper Planet has been something I’m most proud of. All of the songs that we have released were produced by myself. As a band, we’ve opened and headlined on venues all across India and even held a fundraiser ‘Do-for-Kerala’ Concert.
Apart from creating my own music, I work as a Audio and Lighting Engineer at The Bourbon Room, where I have ensured optimal sound quality and technical execution of over 200 live performances and events. I also currently play at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church every Saturdays and Sundays as a session guitarist and singer.
What sets me apart from others is the way I think about music. I have a very mathematical approach with the intention of evoking feelings in my listeners. I like to make my music as rhythmically interesting as possible while still being simple enough for the average music listener to understand and appreciate.
What were you like growing up?
I was always a curious and hyperactive kid growing up. Anything that involved music always intrigued me. My earliest memory of people recognizing my talent was when I was five years old, I would hum the bass line of the songs instead of the main melody. My parents thought that to be interesting and sent me for Indian Carnatic music lessons. As I grew older, I took this sense of curiosity and love for music with me.
