Today we’d like to introduce you to Brite Ma.
Hi Brite, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey started early in life with a personal relationship with music. In high school, I produced music with some friends and little did I know this would be the start of an amazing adventure, I continued perfecting my craft throughout college and wrote on my first independent album in 2009.
Fast forward five years later, and 30 million streams in, I founded my independent label, Future Music LA, Inc. I continued working with international and domestic artists; some signed to major labels, some independent, managed several local artists and expanded by building a team of creatives.
In 2018 FMLA Inc. was signed to another label in Asia as a production company. A year later, we signed one of the biggest acts in the world and are now under UMPG with distribution. Now in 2023, I have several producers on the FMLA team (The Sonic Writers, Mitchplz) along with several singer-songwriters (ADN, Cuja, Gloria Kim, Jeordi Laforge and write hits for major artists across Asia.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are never any smooth roads in the music industry. There will be many ups and downs, but you have to enjoy both ends. You must be resilient to adaptation, new ways of pushing forward and forging new paths to get to where you see yourself. Building strong relationships and finding talented reliable people will be a struggle, but good people always stay, and those not meant to be, never stay around very long.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am and always will be a songwriter at heart. As I’ve grown, I’ve had to wear many hats. I do everything in the creative process from start to finish, production, writing, mixing, A&R, artist management, film, and connecting talent. I’ve always been able to get my ideas down on paper through my thoughts and words. I think the one thing that I am known for is how well I write and how quickly I can complete projects. Articulate and do your best to say something in a way it has never been said before.
I am most proud of all the accomplishments of those around me that I have been blessed to continue to do projects with, If I win, I want everyone to win together. The one thing that sets me apart from others is I’m not worried about how we get to our goal but who is around when we achieve what we set out to do.
I also started a singing competition and partnered with 626 Night Market, The Wish Bus, Unity Studios LA (Adam Berg), and Ben Dragon. This year will be our second annual competition to find some of the best talent in LA. I want to grow a community of creatives and get them to where they can be full-time in music. Shoutout to all the amazing sponsors of this event like Kala Brand Music, ADV Sound, and Wicked Audio.
Special shoutout to Luis Moreno and Deekei Waddell at In the Mix Recording Studios for setting me up with marketing and an amazing location to do some amazing work!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
There is already a shift with AI. There have been people using it to create and mimic what’s already out. I don’t think that it will affect creatives in the next 5-10 years as the soul of the music can’t truly be replicated from technology, You can always use the tools you are given, but you would still have to navigate the creative process and I don’t think AI could do that reliably in music in the next five years, but that’s not to say people won’t try. Maybe with more time, it’ll become a viable option, but I don’t see it happening in the near future.
I believe that streaming services will shift. Platforms will stay the same, but the gap in payment and credits to all those that were a part of the creative process will shrink and this can be a better market for all those involved. The possibility of a new platform to change the status quo may reign king in the future as we see those that wish to create a fair market or a new concept for the creative content.
