Hi Apel Alex, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My passion for construction & craftsmanship was instilled in me from an early age by my family. Both my grandfather and father were skilled carpenters, and I grew up observing their talent. I was captivated by the process of transforming raw materials into beautiful and functional structures. As soon as I was old enough, I started assisting my father on various carpentry projects. My father patiently mentored me, teaching me the importance of attention to detail and the satisfaction that comes from creating something with your own hands.
After completing my formal education and graduating with a business degree, I had the opportunity to work for the general contractor of Home Depot in Southern California. As I immersed myself in various projects under his mentorship, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the construction industry. The accumulation of knowledge and skills over the years gave me the confidence to get my general contractor’s license and start my own construction business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The competitive nature of the construction industry presents ongoing challenges for general contractors. A contractor’s reputation plays a significant role in securing new projects. Being a newly established business, our biggest challenge was to gain the trust of our clients. In order to gain the trust of our new clients, we needed to display our work.
From the very beginning, my mother recognized the potential of showcasing my work in a dedicated space. She understood the impact a showroom could have in not only displaying my craftsmanship but also in attracting clients, inspiring creativity, and establishing a strong presence in the industry. With her influence and support, I opened a retail showroom in Pasadena. This was a huge step forward for my business and it enabled peace of mind and a sense of trust for our potential clients.

Kitchen by Design Inc. is a third-generation construction business that specializes in kitchen remodeling, bathroom remodeling, custom closets, and ADUs (Accessory dwelling units).
