Meet Xiao Han

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xiao Han.

Hi Xiao, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I have always been a good kid, following the path that everyone is going through. The academic journey in China focuses on studying courses rather than exploring my interest. Coming from a family of teachers, my family supported me to grow my own interests and hobby. Till graduation from high school, like most of other kids, I don’t know what I wanted to do for my career. What I did know is that I have always enjoyed pop culture, film and movies. So I thought it would be a great idea to navigate that route into a profession. I never thought about being a director who is in charge of the creative aspect of a visual project. I wanted to be an editor, I consider it as a task that I enjoy doing and a skill I appreciate. So I went into the film school pursuing to be an editor.

In my undergraduate time in school of visual art film&tv, my professor Chris Newman encouraged me and saw what I had in me and appreciated my young creation: my LORNA. Chris inspired me to apply for a transfer to my dream school NYU.

I encountered many great friends and collaborators that I’m still working with today. In the two years after my graduation, I’m now a freelance filmmaker based in NYC, focusing in directing, editing and sound. I had the pleasure and opportunity working with upcoming artists in different realms such as fashion, music and poetry and clients from Sony Music to 88 Rising, The Shed to VOGUE. I’m excited to meet the artists and opportunities on the way of my filmmaking journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like mentioned above, my pursue of art/filmmaking career didn’t happen on day one. It took me two years of rerouting and exploring to land on my final undergraduate degree and the profession role that I am today. Taking that reroute was a big challenge for me many years ago, but Im grateful for the risk I took. Today, as a minority, the industry is harder for us to navigate. I will keep on creating and pushing myself to break into different reals with my filmmaking language and to contribute my creativity in the culture scene.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a filmmaker specializing in directing, editing and sound. My work ranges from branded content, music video to editorial content and short films. I’m known for my creative approaches in my visual works. I’m a proud POC creator and filmmaker serving my community new creative juices!

My bi-cultural background gives me new perspectives in approaching stories and human connections. I love creating visual narratives with a special touch of vulnerability and intimacy.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Working on a project from day one to the day it is released to the public the process excites me. I’m always happy and excited to share with my fellow creators my new work and the new try-s on my skills and visions.
