Life & Work with Ernesto Ramirez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ernesto Ramirez.

Hi Ernesto, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It all started when my husband and I were looking to buy a house and we saw a beautiful painting in one of the model homes, this piece was a big one, of course was pricey and we couldn’t afford it. Then in 2017, I did my first big painting for our new home; I’ve been painting since then. I became a full-time artist during Covid-19. Going to Architecture school as part of the education was taking some art classes but nothing serious, I was more focused on becoming and Architect. This was one of my passions and now I absolutely love painting so much that I have my first studio for my painting.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a very smooth road for me, thanks to my amazing husband who is very supportive and believes in me. My family and my wonderful friends have been always there for me too. I guess I am a very lucky person.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Uncommitted to any particular medium, I have been working on 2D paintings on canvas or wood using oils, cold wax pastels and acrylic paint. I am looking forward to experimenting with different techniques in the future. As a Mexican Artist, I am very proud of my Latin heritage and my paintings represent who I am and where I am coming from. I am not afraid of using bright colors as well as darks. I find painting a good way to tell a story, a lot easier for me than words. I think what sets me apart from other artists is my style. It can be a little bizarre and fun.

I am very proud of having my work in a few galleries throughout San Pedro, Palm Springs, Long Beach and Highland Park. I’ve completed many public art projects in Palm Springs and cathedral city and selected twice for the Latino Heritage Month Calendar & Cultural Guide.

What were you like growing up?
I was a good kid, I loved school but I was very quiet and not so friendly. I have been always very creative. I always dreamed of being an Architect and living in another country, and my dream came true. I’m a big dreamer and I guess I always will be.
