Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Bateman.
Hi Maria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My husband and I relocated to Los Angeles from Canada eight years ago and currently reside there with our two sons, Chase and Theo. Our family frequently travels between Canada and LA. For the past four years, I’ve used social media as a platform to share my experiences as a new mother and my interests, from skincare to organizing.
Through Instagram and social media branding, I’ve gained valuable insights, which led me to my passion project of writing a children’s book. During the pandemic, I collaborated with a longtime friend to write “Tizzy Throws a Fizzy.” The book was inspired by young children’s struggles with emotional turmoil. If you have little ones with big feelings, be sure to check out our book, available on Amazon.
Recently, my husband and I started a new journey by launching our podcast, “The Batemans,” where we discuss our oldest son’s autism diagnosis. We hope to help other families with their autism journeys, plus share our experiences with relationships and life.
In addition to this, my husband is the Founder of “Spades Brand Co,” a USDA Certified Organic skincare brand. We have some exciting new products coming up, including an all-organic aluminum-free deodorant that will be available this summer. We’re thrilled about the future and invite you to follow along.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Moving to Los Angeles posed a significant hurdle for me, as I had to essentially start anew. Struggling to acclimate to unfamiliar surroundings and not knowing a soul, I found it difficult to break out of my comfort zone and extend myself to others. The challenge of forging new friendships in a foreign city, much less a foreign country, was daunting. However, I’m appreciative that I persisted in overcoming my trepidations. Now, I’m privileged to count among my acquaintances some of the most remarkable individuals I’ve ever encountered, all of whom I’ve been fortunate enough to meet in Los Angeles.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m currently going through a transition in my life. While I’ve heavily relied on collaborations through social media in the past few years, the industry has been changing and I am now exploring new avenues. Recently, I have taken on more marketing responsibilities within our family’s brand, Spades Brand Co, which is a thrilling opportunity that will benefit our family as a whole. Additionally, I have a few other exciting prospects lined up for this year. Life is short, and I believe in exploring and trying new things. If you’re reading this, take it as a sign to finally take that leap and pursue what you’ve always wanted.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Social media platforms are continually evolving and adapting to satisfy the ever-changing needs of users. One particular platform that has been known to make frequent algorithm changes is Instagram. Nowadays, algorithms across various social media channels have placed more emphasis on quality content and consistent output. Additionally, video content is progressively gaining more traction in social media feeds as users prefer to engage with visually oriented content. So, if you’re kickstarting your social media journey, equip yourself with a good camera phone and a reliable editing app to produce some eye-pleasing content.
