Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Sutliff.
Hi Keith, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in the film industry over 13 years ago. I have been in Hollywood California for almost 11 years now working in the business. I started out in acting. Then got into filmmaking in 2014, which lead me to starting my own production company, KS PICTURES LLC, in 2016. I then decided to start this film studio I own/operate now, Sutliff Studios: Virtual Productions. We specialize in Virtual Production and In-Camera VFX for film, TV, commercials, music videos, and other forms of media. We use an LED volume wall to project backdrop environments for productions so they can shoot everything in the studio and not have to travel to locations. This applies to both outdoor and indoor locations which ultimately saves productions money. We achieve this using gaming software with 3D assets and video/image plates in 2D assets.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It certainly has not been. Every day is a new hurdle to overcome and a challenge to face. Especially owning the virtual production studio. There were numerous technical aspects to learn in the beginning and master. Also, a lot of trial and error for the latest ideas to improve virtual production from what is already out to the public. Then of course first coming to LA and starting out acting in that side of the business there were challenges and the same with my production company.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Sutliff Studios: VP is a full-service Virtual Production Studio for Commercials, Podcasts, Film, TV, Photos, Music Videos, and Interviews. A full-service Virtual Production Studio with state-of-the-art technology for the ultimate user experience. Using high-resolution LED panels to create a 3D environment of the user’s choice gives the production instant access to change the location of filming in a matter of a split second. This allows faster filming to meet the production schedule. Sutliff Studios: VP uses a gaming program called Unreal Engine to create the 3D environment of the user’s preference such as desert, mountains, woods, inner city, roads, and more. This, in conjunction with the term “parallax” (unison of camera movement and elements shifting perspective on screen), enables the environment to change on screen as the camera moves, thereby creating an ultra-realistic appearance of a single physical location. The studio uses a camera tracking system to achieve this.
