Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Shaw.
Hi Julia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, I had always said I wanted to be a singer, but it wasn’t until I was a teenager that I started learning guitar & piano and playing local gigs. I played at local coffee shops, breweries, and open mics – but always covers. I had tried to write my own music but never liked it enough to play it in front of other people. Then, during the pandemic, I found myself jobless and living at home again and decided to give it another go. I found that I was writing more honestly than I ever had, and I was really enjoying the music. I kept writing and met my producer, Dean Rosenzweig. We recorded and mixed songs in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and San Diego. It’s been such a pleasure working with him, and we recently released my debut album, Passing Through. These days I’m living in San Diego and trying to play more shows and get my music out there. I’m still writing as much as I can and hope to release many more songs in the future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, but I’m really lucky to have people helping me out that make things easier. I think the biggest struggle for me has been the vulnerability of songwriting. I’m often my own harshest critic, and it takes a lot for me to want to release music into the world. I could go back to every song I’ve written and tell you what I would do differently now, but I’m trying to give myself more grace. Being an artist and a perfectionist can make finishing a project really difficult!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer/songwriter and I’m most proud of my recent album, Passing Through. It feels like the last ten years of my life summarized, and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I think there is a real honesty and vulnerability to these songs. They’re very raw lyrically, and I think there’s a song for everyone on the album.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m currently planning a private release party for the album, and I’m really excited to share the album live with my family and friends. I’m most looking forward to playing more gigs and collaborating with artists in the LA and San Diego area. I’m writing more and more music, and can’t wait to see where it takes me. Hopefully, another album release is in the future!
