Check Out Nehemiah Muhiri’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nehemiah Muhiri.

Hi Nehemiah , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a young boy growing up in Nairobi, Kenya, I was always drawn to music. I loved listening to the radio and would spend hours trying to recreate the songs I heard on my makeshift keyboard. I had a natural talent for music, and even though my family didn’t have much money, they were always supportive of my passion.

When I got my first synthesizer, a Yamaha PSR series, it opened up a whole new world for me. I began to experiment with different sounds and learned how to play guitar and bass through YouTube tutorials. Despite the challenges that came with living in a developing country, I remained determined to pursue my dream of becoming a music producer.

As I got older, I started playing in a few bands and doing studio sessions. But I soon realized that I wanted to write my own music, so I formed my first band, Tectum. We released an album in 2021, which was a major milestone for us.

Shortly after, I applied to Berklee College of Music, which was a dream come true for me. I was thrilled to be accepted, even though the financial situation was uncertain. Fortunately, with hard work and determination, I was able to secure the funds I needed to attend the school.

Now, I am the band leader and music director of The Jabalis, and we recently released our album “Song of My Heart,” which has received critical acclaim and has been listed as one of the top 10 tracks in Kenya’s playlists. I am currently under the Independent Recording and Production wing of Berklee College of Music, where I continue to hone my craft and pursue my passion for music.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up in a developing country can be restraining, especially in the area of arts. The music industry was crowded and corrupt which made it very hard for a new artist to penetrate. Apart from that, growing up, I had to understand that my family’s finances were restrained. That meant I did not get to go to Music school or buy instruments as I wanted. In fact, after I finished high school, I had started doing Cybersecurity as it was more affordable and attainable. But then I decided to wing it with Berklee College of Music and by God’s favor, I got accepted.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a music producer, band leader of The Jabalis and a solo artist. I play bass guitar and electric guitar primarily. My biggest accomplishment so far is the release of The Jabalis, “Song Of My Heart” Album and the release of my single Blues & The Deep.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love working on modular music with my modules. Every time I am working on a project, it’s always a thrill. I also enjoy taking time apart to reading the Bible I find it very refreshing.
