Rising Stars: Meet Andrea Bellucci

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Bellucci.

Hi Andrea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started playing piano in middle school, just because my father used to play guitar and had a digital piano at home. After not much time, I realized that was something really fun for me, and saw I had something more than a passion, some talent, so I just focused on that entirely quite soon. So I kept playing and practicing, and soon I wanted to expand my views by starting to play not only classical music but also other genres that I love, such as progressive metal. As soon as I had the chance then, I joined a band that was looking for a keyboardist (high school). From this experience, I slowly realized that music could not only be appreciated and experienced for what it was but also used as a way to tell a story, and it was only a matter of time before I began to become passionate about music for films and video games. So I decided to dive into film music while playing classical and metal music and while studying film history and musicology at university, too. All this then converged into the work I do today, which basically is telling stories through music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In my opinion, it’s never a smooth road when you really love something. That’s just because when you truly want to do something, you go deep in that and things don’t stay superficial, so that means that at some point you have to face lots of different aspects, some of them being unexpected, some of them being just hard to deal with, but that’s part of the game, I guess.

To me, the hardest thing is to be persistent all the time, not necessarily with others, but with myself: it would be so easy, when things aren’t going the way you planned, to just say “Yeah, I guess it’s not for me”, and then blame this or that; it is way harder to say “it didn’t work today, but I have to try again tomorrow”. When you realize this, you become fearless and start enjoying every inch of the road.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create music for films and games. Specifically, I love to be part of the story-telling process and give the narrative a voice. So far, I’ve been working on indie projects, as well as with major productions and AAA titles, producing music soundtracks for lots of different stories. While there’s not a winner among the projects I’m most proud of, I’d say that I’m always proud when I can describe stories with the best version of the music I want to write for them because that means that me and my coworker are on the same page about the way of telling something with music, and what you get that, magic happens.

Every one of us composers is different from the others, for the same reason why any human being has different fingerprints: we are unique, and that flows into every note a composer can write. I always try to set my work apart by being myself when I write, and by having fun when I do that because if I’m not charmed and entertained by my own music, then why should other people be? I believe it’s a way of respecting others’ time and feelings.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
The fact that I’m both a classically trained musician and a metal one, and I write music for films and games as well, is always a surprising thing for people, but when they get to know me, they know why, and everything makes sense.
