Daily Inspiration: Meet Lora Larson-Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lora Larson-Miller.

Hi Lora, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I created a music club – called Music Club – in 2019 to share my passion for music with others. It started with 20 members. I’d email them on a weekly basis, following a similar format to a book club but instead of reading books, members would listen to an album or set. Since then, Music Club has found its home on Substack and has grown to 450 music lovers from around the world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Sending out a weekly newsletter requires dedication, organization and motivation. It’s important to be consistent for subscribers while accepting that inspiration and creativity ebbs & flows. I took a six month break the second half of last year to figure out where to take it next. Taking a pause was a positive decision as I re-launched Music Club in January this year on a different platform (Musiclub.Substack.com) and with a different newsletter structure.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known by Music Club members as the Human Algorithm, responsible to date for all their improved music rotations and the recommendations they pass off as their own 🙂 Music Club makes music discovery easy and rewarding! I send out a weekly newsletter that features a Human Algorithm mix (HA for short) from myself or a special guest. HA mixes are made by a human, not an algorithm, and are created for a specific vibe or moments in time. There’s nothing like listening to the right music at the right time. It is something that I strive for. Members also receive a monthly edition that features a Q&A from someone in the music space and new album recos. In addition to curating mixes for the newsletter, I help brands discover their sound identity through custom Music Club playlists.

I feel proud when new members join the club and share how much they enjoy receiving my newsletters, listening to HA mixes and discovering music from new artists. I am also proud of the musical diversity of members. From hardcore “Swifties” to hard-core techno, Music Club has music for everyone.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Networking requires you to step outside of your comfort zone as you have to just put yourself out there and share with others about your business or side hustle. It’s definitely something I am still practicing and it helps to observe others. I have a couple of friends who run their own business and seeing them talk about their businesses and projects is always inspiring.
