Meet Phillip Herel of Herel Physical Therapy in Brentwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Herel.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Los Angeles after finishing my doctorate degree in Physical Therapy at Stony Brook University in New York. Throughout the years, I’ve found a particular interest in Orthopedic and Neurologic Physical therapy because I was able to connect very well with my patients and find excitement with challenging cases. While working in outpatient clinics throughout the Los Angeles area, I was able to meet, not only incredible patients, but wonderful mentors and therapists full of knowledge and experience. These relationships supplemented my abilities and allowed me to grow.

I noticed very early in my career the importance of building rapport and connecting with each individual patient. Quite often, I would observe patients not receiving adequate treatments and, at times, being transferred among under-qualified office personnel just so the clinic could increase its numbers. I wanted to develop a model of care that specifically centered around the patient. Including, one on one treatment sessions where they were comfortable working with the same therapist that could track their progress while developing a professional relationship. With this mindset, I was finding better, long lasting results. I realized that not only was I empowering my patients, but in return they were empowering me. By fostering these relationships with patients and colleagues, I was given the opportunity to meet Dr. Eric Mizrahi who is an amazing and experienced internist. Dr. Mizrahi played a vital role in the development of Herel Physical Therapy. With his help, Herel Physical Therapy was created in early 2016 with the goal of providing the highest quality Physical Therapy care for patients of all ages in the community.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been plenty of challenges and obstacles with trying to create a sustainable business. Starting as the sole practitioner of the practice, time was the most valuable resource. Dealing with insurance companies, networking, marketing, scheduling, all at the same time as providing effective treatments for patients meant there was very little time for anything else. But prioritizing and dealing with each obstacle provided a learning experience to make the business run more efficiently.

Herel Physical Therapy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Herel Physical Therapy is an outpatient physical therapy clinic in Brentwood, CA and we specialize in orthopedic, neurologic, and sports related conditions. It is our mission to use the most current evidence based practice to accurately evaluate a patient’s physical ailment, design comprehensive and individualized treatment plans to correct the problem, set obtainable goals to track improvement, and create a constructive learning environment that will enable our patients to perform at their highest physical level. We are proud to provide one on one treatment sessions to ensure continuity of care and to develop proper working relationships with patients. And with our caring, courteous, and professional medical staff, we have repeated success stories with lasting results.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far was the ability to open up my own outpatient practice with the support of family, friends, and colleagues. I’m proud of the hard work and perseverance it required to become a successful physical therapy clinic, but more importantly, I’m proud of the services we provide people knowing that we are making a meaningful positive impact on their lives.
