Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Holley.
Hi Brandon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. I grew up in San Diego and enjoyed surfing, skateboarding and playing music. After playing in numerous bands throughout school, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my clothing line, BranVille Clothing and a new musical path. I played in a few bands in LA and it wasn’t until I met my long-time friend Mikealis that I started venturing into the hip hop/ DJ world. I then met Sky Blu of LMFAO in 2011 and that’s where everything took off. We toured the world together for years and I started releasing my own music in 2014. I opened up for many artists as a DJ such as G-Eazy, Shwayze, Huey Mack, Cam Meekins, Adventure Club, Bro Safari, Destroid, Seven Lions, Z-Trip, Protohype, and more. As of the last few years, I have been mainly focusing on producing music. Today, I want to keep exploring new genres of music and produce for artists all around the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t believe there is an easy path to being an artist in any way. Ten years ago, I was touring nonstop to get my music out there and meet new fans at shows worldwide. I really enjoyed playing with all different types of artists to really expand the amount of ears I was reaching with my music. I also witnessed a lot of friends and people I worked with that always wanted to steer me in certain directions due to trends or what was popular at the time. I always stayed true to myself and kept making the music I enjoyed and wanted to hear. I continue to do that till this day and never really think about what anyone else thinks. I understand my music isn’t for everyone, but there are also millions of people in this world that enjoy what I create which continues you drive me every day.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I would say I am most known for my clothing line, BranVille. My clothing line truly goes hand in hand with my music. I created my line back in 2006 and I’ve always rocked it every step of the way. Wearing my own clothing at every show, studio session, photoshoot, or whatever it is really put it on the map. Being friends with a bunch of artists and like-minded people always helped as well. I created the “Party For A Living” shirt when I was living in North Hollywood before 2010. It was a shirt that all my friends laughed at but spread like a wildfire. It was a slogan we lived by and it was a turning point with BranVille. That shirt took off like crazy and till this day I still see people wearing/ talking about it. It was never meant to be a shirt that said, “I get wasted and rage all day.” It was basically a shirt that stated, “I enjoy every second of life and live it up.” Till this day I am still selling that shirt along with a wide selection of other products.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I definitely believe luck played a huge role of where I am today. No doubt about that. When I first moved to LA, I had a couple of friends but we were all young and hungry to get out there. I started going out a lot to network and honestly just have fun and party in a new city. I started meeting a lot of inspiring people in the music and film industry which is where the doors started opening up. It really is about who you know in the industry to really jump-start your career. I met Sky Blu through a band that I sponsored at the time with BranVille. They wore my clothing on stage every day on the Bamboozle Road Show, Sky liked what he saw, we hung out, and the rest was history after meeting. You really need to put yourself out there and network as much as you can to open the doors you are looking for.
