Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Miska.
Hi Sandra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a part of the entertainment industry. When it came time to pick my major in college, I decided to study English with a concentration in film studies. My ultimate goal was to write for film and TV, but there was not much of a market for screenwriters in Michigan, so three years after I graduated with my B.A. from Michigan State University, I headed east to earn my M.F.A. in screenwriting, film & TV from Boston University. I have lived in Los Angeles for eleven years and have been fortunate enough to intern and work in various areas of the film and TV industry, as well as other creative fields. In 2013, I started working as a background actress, a job that I had on and off for almost a decade. My BG career took me behind the scenes of most of the major television shows shot in Los Angeles, as well as numerous films and commercials. By 2015, I was able to join SAG-AFTRA. I have a strong interest in comedy and have studied improv at the Second City Training Center and Upright Citizens Brigade, and recently graduated from the Second City’s conservatory program. Since 2014, I have been a writer and editor for the online Magazine Entertainment Voice.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has definitely been a bumpy road. I have dealt with my fair share of rejection and unscrupulous people. I try to stay positive and focused, do what I can to make myself an ideal co-worker and collaborator, and always be open to new opportunities.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For Entertainment Voice, I write reviews of films and television series, as well as interview actors, directors and writers about their work. I’ve really enjoyed making connections, both in person and via Zoom, with artists, public relations professionals, and other journalists. I pride myself on my ability to build relationships.
I’m also very proud of the recent sketch comedy show I wrote and acted in with my classmates from Second City. We wrote several sketches based off of our improv and created a live Zoom show that ran for five weeks. It was a fun and rewarding experience that allowed me to show this part of myself with friends and family who had previously not been able to see me perform live.
What does success mean to you?
Success for me, career-wise, is when you are able to channel your education, skills and passions into a career that you enjoy.
