Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Gray.
Anthony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started in Compton. If I can keep it simplistic it was all “God” through the gang violence, molestation, Church hurt, parent hurt, conditional hurt, Hell.. overall hurt. I have to say it was nothing but “God” that truly kept me through it all. Definitely, a firm believer of what you consume you’ll project… I refuse to be a victim. I rather walk in victory and even though I went through all this ugly, I gave birth to something so beautiful. “Lyrics of perseverance”. One thing about trauma, if you reside in it too much, it becomes something that consumes you, in the process stunting your growth and taking power away from your testimony. I choose to rise above it and love on those who still in it until they are out of it.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest obstacle is my mind… You’re the executioner, judge, victim and the suspect. You gotta choose one of them. Take into consideration you don’t control, none of them. You have to know that you’re not in control and stop living in the illusion that you are and just be. This road has been pretty Rocky, but I’m built for it. Depression, suicide, being a father, it all comes to the forefront when it comes to this music. The frustrations of trying to stay original as you go against a repetitious sound will give you straight turmoil and high anxiety LOL. On top of trying to be the standard without compromise. Once I lost my dad, I had to rebuild and still rebuilding. That is and still the biggest struggle.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Well… I like to state that I’m a living lyric. I literally live my lyrics… I’m a conscious hip hop and R&B artist. I’m known for my music and also my inspirational videos. I spread positivities on and off the mic. I’m a motivational speaker and author who is currently working on a book in regard to men being affected by postpartum and how to deal with it. I also forgot to mention that I recently just became a social justice director. It’s hard to say what sets me apart because I battle with standing out like most of us do which make us all look the same in a sense lol. Sometimes you look the same, but not the same and that is hard to differentiate for even myself. So I let God direct my path after all we’re called to be peculiar.
