Today we’d like to introduce you to Mannix Esqueda.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mannix. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I met my business partner, Jim Steinhaus, when I began working with him at a Los Angeles motion graphics studio in 1997. After 10 years, I left the studio in 2007 and pursued other projects around the Los Angeles area as a freelance designer; all the while keeping contact with Jim and reporting my observations of how different shops were run. It was during these discussions that the conversation moved over to setting up our own design studio.
We started Cake Studios in 2010 and have been growing ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Having worked with Jim for over 10 years, we shared the same views about design approach, production and delivery. The obstacles mainly are associated with finding the right talent that fits with our core team.
Another obstacle is finding harmony with collaborators when projects warrant a larger team than Cake. For example, we’ve developed a good relationship with the team at Ross/Rocket Surgery. We design and build graphics for their Xpression real time platform and the hand-off has been very successful over many projects. You couldn’t ask for better collaborators.

Cake is a full service creative house offering extensive experience in branding, design, animation & management of the creative process for clients around the world. Since 2010 we have steadily built a reputation as an industry leader in high production value motion graphics for broadcast, entertainment, sports and new media.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success when three areas are accomplished by Cake Studios:
When our clients are both surprised and happy with our design solutions.
When our production team has grown creatively from the experience of working on individual projects
When as Creative Director, I’m pleased with the overall look of the final deliverables
