Hi Taryn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It all started with a hashtag. Ten years ago, #pasadenacharm was originally on my personal Instagram that I started when my son was a baby. We would do these long stroller adventures through Pasadena, and I clocked that Pasadena was in the middle of a renaissance. There were so many new businesses popping up and I saw a gap–nobody on social media was featuring the exciting new happenings in the city. At the time, there were only a few accounts on Instagram that were Pasadena-specific, and Instagram itself was a new frontier–people considered it a personal space but not a marketing space. I found myself convincing the businesses I was meeting to let me feature them on Instagram. Quickly, the tables turned to people reaching out to me.
Through @pasadenacharm and all the creatives I met, Social Charm Agency was the natural next step. What started as my love for Pasadena grew into my business, and I love that. With Social Charm Agency, we help growing brands with digital marketing: social media management, cleanups, workshops and consultations. We know social media can be intimidating and pride ourselves on getting all-size brands the attention they deserve so they can be competitive in their niche.
What I love most is helping people achieve their goals and see success. Small businesses give so much to the community, they are a core piece of what makes every neighborhood special, and I love helping them shine online. While my success with social media started on Instagram, I have a degree in Communications from the University of Southern California and over ten years of experience working in marketing and social media. I understand social media inside and out, and absolutely know how vital it is as a marketing tool for small businesses. I meet so many business owners that are overwhelmed or frozen when it comes to getting started, and I want them to know help is out there! We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Setting up a successful social media agency was no easy feat, and it took dedication to make it happen. Initially, gaining traction in the Instagram and Tiktok age was a challenge because it was like the Wild West. I had to learn how to develop consistent content creation ideas and marketing strategies that were appropriate for the ever-changing landscape. It was also a real balance to keep up with trends while maintaining brand integrity. I’ve always been an early adopter of new platforms, and love how you have to learn to swim by just jumping in–in my experience, it made me fluent very quickly, even if I struggled at first. While building my agency wasn’t a walk in the park, I can easily say that it has been worth the effort.
Getting used to navigating these platforms took time and effort, not to mention ample research to understand the multiple features offered that are typically ignored by most users. I quickly learned that social media can’t be effectively run by one person (ie. an intern, your teenager, or you, the entrepreneur who already has enough on your plate). Once I understood the value of attacking social media with a team, it was a game changer.
Through hard work and endurance, I am now successfully running a full team with loyal clients who value our work.
