Meet Dana Hayes-Burke of DHB Vision Strategists

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Hayes-Burke.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After university, I followed what everyone else did. I got a job instead of getting into a business. As a young professional, I didn’t like the company I worked for at the beginning of my career. However, I made rapid progress. My career progressed from entry-level to supervisor to manager in less than seven years. At each stage of my advancement, my life became less and less like what I desired. I didn’t have time flexibility. The level of stress was high. And most importantly, I knew that I was not fulfilling my purpose. So I went back to the drawing board – my vision. And I uncovered what I was passionate about and my values. I wanted a life where I had the freedom to be there for my family and future children. My passion for empowering others and business was reignited as a result of this experience. While still work my corporate job, I launched my first business, and after twelve months, I went full-time into it. From there, I launch my dream business – my business consultancy and coaching firm. Now, I work with entrepreneurs and micro-business owners in the Caribbean and diaspora to help them to scale their businesses and become more profitable.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, it hasn’t been an easy road. The road to success is never a straight line. But, I have learned that without the challenges, you would not build competencies, make improvements or be suitable for the next stage of your growth. I genuinely believe that every setback and failure, if you take it as information, help you to make better choices and decisions the next time. Some of the challenges I faced were mainly, having to figure out the path. I had no one in my circle who had built a global business before. Many told me that it was a pipe dream. But I knew that it was possible… Even though I was building this global business from the Caribbean, I knew it could be done. So I had to silence the voices. I had to build up my confidence but I also had to demonstrate my competence. The people who needed me also had to believe that I could help them achieve their goals. So I mastered turning up in the spaces that they were in. I overcame my resistance to using social media as a marketing platform. Another challenge I experienced was in building capabilities to accept international payments, which at the time of starting my consultancy firm, was not the easiest feat. But, it’s only impossible until it is not and I found the pathway to do it. Now I help my clients do the same as well. These are just some examples.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
DHB Vision Strategists is a Strategic Business and Leadership Development firm that provides coaching, consultancy and training to business owners and their teams. As the Chief Vision Strategist, I serve as the primary business coach and consultant. I am also an international speaker. Our goal at DHB Vision Strategists is to equip leaders of small firms and entrepreneurs with the tools to increase their income and grow their businesses regardless of the economic climate.

Our role is to educate, empower and build. We do this through our coaching programs, training and development programs and strategic mapping consultancy. I am most proud of the fact that we have served businesses in over seven countries and those businesses are still performing well today. Our secret is that our approach helps entrepreneurs and micro-business owners apply the strategies of successful big businesses to their small businesses.

Our most in-demand service is our business coaching for micro-business owners and entrepreneurs which is based on our signature, 4P3 Model. My Planning Table Strategy Sessions to create strategic plans are also highly sort after. Apart from that, I am often invited to speak on topics of vision, business strategy for startups and leadership.

It is truly amazing how extensive the reach of DHB Vision Strategists and myself as The Vision Builder has grown in a few short years.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My best piece of advice is to get clear on what you want to achieve. You need a personal vision. Hold on to that vision tightly and keep it at the forefront of your mind. Let it inform your actions. You will find that with clarity of vision, it is easier for you to discern the right alignments as well as clearly state who you are and what you are about. Only then will the right mentor find you and the right network be created around you.
