Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugh Hou.
Hi Hugh, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a YouTuber and Filmmaker specializing in 360 Virtual Reality / Metaverse Filmmaking. I moved to US when I am 21 from China. After graduating from Cornell University, I move to Los Angeles to pursue my dream to become a content creator. Without any connection in the Hollywood Industry, I started my YouTube channel instead and self-release my video content. When I started, the media landscape is already crowded with regular 2D Video content. To be innovated, I deep in the research of 360 Filmmaking.
Later on when Oculus DK1 came out, I apply my knowledge to create 3D 360 and VR180 video content. Some of my original VR videos got picked up by YouTube VR with over several millions of views worldwide. From then on, I focus on teaching other content creators how to get into the world of 360 / VR filmmaking – by offering in-depth tutorials and original content as inspiration. On the commercial side, I has produced VR content for numerous companies and organizations such as Meta, Samsung, Canon, the Olympics, the Special Olympics, Google, MasterCard, Twitter, TikTok, RedBull Music, LACOSTE, Huawei, and the Los Angeles Police Department.
I also directs and produces Mixed Reality music videos. I worked with musical artists such as I Prevail, Joyner Lucas, Cypress Hill, Moneybagg yo, SHAED, Anjunabeats, Kristina Sky, and Cosmic Gate.
My original VR productions got featured on Top Gear, Newsweek, LAD Bible, and other major publications. My VR videos were listed among the Top 15 VR Videos of the Year 2-year in a row by Forbes magazine.
My goal is to help the XR industry thrive and to improve the quality of VR filmmaking in the Metaverse – to bring reality into the Virtual Reality.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey is never too smooth. We are fighting an uphill battle on VR content creation. As Meta control, the distribution and viewers need to have Meta Quest VR headset to view our content. This limit the distribution of our content. So we are not growing nearly as fast as other up-and-coming creators that focus only on Instagram Reel or TikTok. But I refuse to take the easy way out and decide to contribute to create a new storytelling techniques for this new medium – and hopefully become the future of storytelling.

I run social media channels to educate the art of XR Filmmaking / XR Storytelling. We also produce original content inside Meta Quest TV. My channel name is “Hugh Hou” and “Metaverse Stage”. I worked with creators like Karen X Cheng, BlackboxTV, SHAED, and many more to come. Just my YouTube channel alone has 24 million views of my original content.
