Conversations with Yilin Xu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yilin Xu.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been studying film for six years, but the story of me and film is far more than that. Due to family reasons, my father took me to the production set since I was a child. I saw that everyone was busy with their work, so sleepy that they couldn’t open their eyes but they were still very motivated. I realized that this job must be very interesting. Since then, the seeds of studying film have taken root in my heart. I got my bachelor’s degree in Columbia College Chicago. Those four years are unforgettable in my life. I started studying and trying out different positions in the film industry and gradually became clear about my interests. The relaxed and free creative atmosphere in Chicago also strengthened my determination to continue studying in the United States. Then, I moved to LA and keep studying film production major in the University of Southern California. Now, I’m a second-year MFA student. I’ve been lucky enough to stay in the industry I love and get farther and farther.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, it was the change of roles. Everyone is very friendly and nice at school, but when you entering the real industry, you need to change your perspective from a student to a filmmaker. You need to be more professional and efficient to help the crew complete the work. Also, you have to accept that you are just an insignificant role, and no one would even remember your name or rely on you in the first day. But never give up! Try to do your job well, prove yourself to everyone.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a 2nd-year film production major MFA student at the University of Southern California. My concentration is writing and directing, but at the same time, my minor is production design and editing.

As a writer/director, I’m a big fan of independent feature films, such as Aftersun and Close. I like to dig into different relationships. The complex and changeable emotions always move me.

As a production designer/editor, I enjoy the process of create the world and I’m fascinated by their detail.

As an international student, I think Eastern culture is a valuable characteristic of me. Reticence and introversion will allow me to explore myself more quietly and steadily and clarify my goals.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Never give up. Keep calm.
